A 64-year-old Singaporean woman has been fined S$3,000 after swearing at a police officer who was responding to her call for assistance in Chinatown.
Yip Mee Lan pleaded guilty to one count of harassment under the Protection from Harassment Act. She was sentenced in court on July 15.
The incident stemmed from a dispute that took place on April 10 at a coffeeshop in Chinatown, where Yip had repeatedly contacted the police for help, 8world reported.
Police Responded To Assault Complaint
According to court proceedings, Yip initially called the police after alleging that a 54-year-old Malaysian woman had assaulted her at the coffeeshop.
By the time officers arrived, the woman had already left the scene.
The attending officer advised Yip to contact the police again if she spotted the alleged assailant.
Woman Arrested After Refusing To Cooperate
At around 9:30pm on the same day, Yip called the police again after claiming she had seen the woman.
Officers arrived approximately 15 minutes later and began questioning her about the incident.
During the interview, Yip repeatedly interrupted the officer while speaking. The officer also observed that she appeared to be intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol.
Despite being reminded several times to lower her voice, she failed to comply with the officer’s instructions and was subsequently placed under arrest.
Officer Subjected To Curse And Swear
As police escorted Yip to the patrol vehicle, she directed a series of curses at the 25-year-old officer.
Among the remarks recorded by the officer’s body-worn camera was: “I curse your 18 generations, I curse you to have no sons, no one to see you to your grave.”
The footage documenting the incident was later used as part of the investigation.
Yip was formally charged on June 24 before pleading guilty in court.
Court Allows Fine To Be Paid In Instalments
The court imposed a S$3,000 fine for the offence.
Following sentencing, the judge allowed Yip to pay S$2,000 immediately, with the remaining S$1,000 to be settled at a later date.
