Just got back from a 5D4N Bangkok trip with my wife, and overall it was a great vacation until the very last hour heading to Suvarnabhumi Airport. Really need to air this out because the sheer audacity of this driver made my blood boil.
So we checked out of our hotel, booked a Grab Premium to the airport to end the trip on a comfortable note, and jumped in. Everything was smooth sailing—I had already set the payment method to GrabPay via my credit card before we even stepped foot into the car. Transaction showed confirmed on my app.
Fast forward to when we arrived at the departure hall terminal. I grabbed our luggage from the boot, turned around to thank the driver, and this uncle suddenly block the door, pointing frantically at his phone shouting, “Cash pay! Cash pay! Cash pay!”
I was like… Ha?
I showed him my app screen where it clearly stated “Paid via GrabPay / Credit Card”, but he kept shaking his head, waving his hands, and insisting in loud broken English, “No no, app wrong! Cash pay cash pay! You pay me 500 baht now!”
My wife was already getting stressed because our flight was in two hours, but I knew 100% this guy was trying to double-dip and score a free cash payout off tourists. I looked him straight in the eye, pulled out my phone, and said loudly, “Okay can, wait. I call Grab support right now to verify with them on the spot.”
The moment the words “call Grab” left my mouth, his entire demeanor switched instantly. He panicked, started waving his hands aggressively saying, “No need no need! Okay okay, go go!” and practically sprinted back into his driver’s seat and drove off.
Knn, want to cheat people, at least do some market research first la. Go cheat those ang moh tourists who don’t know how Grab works or are too blur to check their app receipts! We from Singapore leh, Grab is literally our daily life since 2014. You think I first time taking ride-hailing app ah?
Really left a super sour taste in my mouth at the very end of the trip. The classic scammer mindset is still so rampant there, really 3rd world mentality. Always check your app and stand your ground, guys—don’t let these dishonest drivers “eat” you into paying twice!
