Bro, I really don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Just need to vent here because my heart is broken but the sheer ridiculousness of the situation is insane.
Yesterday was my ex-girlfriend’s birthday. She’s been talking about this specific artisanal bakery in Tiong Bahru for months, saying how much she wanted their signature cake. So, being the dutiful BF, I took half-day leave, travelled all the way down in the humid afternoon heat, and joined the stupidly long queue.
I was standing there for almost 45 minutes, sweating like mad, checking my phone every few minutes to make sure I got the exact flavour and customization she wanted. Just as I was finally second in line—literally staring at the cake through the glass display—my phone buzzes.
It’s a 2-minute voice message from her.
I thought maybe she wanted to change her order or tell me she was on her way. I put on my AirPods to listen.
“Hey… I’ve been thinking a lot lately, and I don’t think we’re compatible anymore. I feel like we’re at different stages of life and I need space to find myself. Don’t come over later. Let’s not see each other for a while.”
Tone totally flat. No warning. No prior fight. Just straight-up cold.
Bro, when I tell you I froze… The auntie behind the counter looked at me and asked, “Boy, next! What cake you want?”
I was standing there with my AirPods in, ears ringing, tears almost welling up in public, looking at this $80 cake. What was I supposed to do? Buy the cake for myself and eat the whole thing at the void deck crying?
In the end, I just told the auntie, “Sorry auntie, wrong shop,” and walked out into the heat. I took the MRT back home feeling completely empty. Sent her a text saying “Okay, got it,” and she just left me on read. 3 years together ended via WhatsApp voice note while I was queuing for her favorite pastry.
Is this the new low for Singapore dating scene or am I just heng sway? How do people move on from something so abrupt?
What’s the worst way you or your friends have been dumped in SG? Give me some wild stories so I feel less alone, please.
