Woman Suffers Severe Groin Injury On Carnival Cruise Rope Swing, Faces Over S$71,000 in Medical Bills

A 28-year-old American woman’s Caribbean cruise holiday turned into a life-changing ordeal after a rope swing accident during an independent shore excursion in Honduras left her with severe injuries and a lengthy recovery ahead.

Kirsten Lindsey was travelling with her boyfriend, Blake Ford, on a Carnival cruise when the incident occurred during a stop at the Central American island. The excursion was not organised or endorsed by the cruise operator.

According to Mr Ford, what began as an exciting holiday quickly became a medical emergency after Ms Lindsey used a rope swing at the attraction. He believes a retrieval line connected to the swing may have malfunctioned, tightening between her legs moments before she entered the water and causing devastating injuries.

Injuries Worsened After Returning to Cruise Ship

Initially, Ms Lindsey believed she had suffered only a minor injury and attempted to continue with the rest of the day despite being in pain. However, her condition deteriorated significantly after returning to the cruise ship.

As the swelling worsened, she eventually became unable to walk and required a wheelchair to move around the vessel. Medical staff onboard provided treatment, but the swelling reportedly increased until it reached the size of a baseball.

Despite spending nearly two weeks under medical observation aboard the ship, her symptoms continued to worsen, prompting discussions about emergency evacuation.

Emergency Medical Flight Came at Enormous Cost

The couple were reportedly presented with several options, including remaining under the ship’s care, arranging their own transport from another port, or paying for an emergency medical flight back to the United States.

They ultimately chose the medical evacuation, which required a substantial upfront payment. According to details shared by Mr Ford through an online fundraiser, they were asked to pay approximately US$20,000 as a deposit before departure and another US$30,000 upon arriving in the United States.

During the wait for evacuation, Ms Lindsey remained in the ship’s medical facility for more than a day. Medical expenses on board alone reportedly exceeded US$3,500, excluding doctors’ fees, medications and other procedures.

Multiple Surgeries and Ongoing Recovery

Following delays, Ms Lindsey was transported by ambulance to an airport before being flown to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, aboard a private medical aircraft.

She underwent emergency surgery shortly after arriving in Florida before later travelling back to her hometown in Louisiana, where she continued receiving further treatment.

Mr Ford said the recovery process remains ongoing, with additional medical care still required. Beyond the medical costs, the couple also faces expenses related to accommodation, transport, lost income and returning themselves and their vehicle home.

Carnival Responds to Incident

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed it was aware of the incident but stressed that the accident did not occur aboard one of its ships or during an excursion operated by the company.

A spokesperson said the cruise line’s onboard medical team treated Ms Lindsey promptly after she returned to the vessel and helped facilitate access to additional medical resources. The company added that while the excursion was independently arranged, it remains concerned for the guest’s recovery and extends its well wishes.

To help manage the growing financial burden, Mr Ford launched a fundraising campaign, which has already received significant public support. Donations have covered much of the campaign target, although the couple says costs continue to rise as Ms Lindsey focuses on her recovery from the traumatic accident.
