Passengers on a Taipei MRT train were left frightened after a man loudly declared that “many people will die” while speaking on the phone, triggering panic inside a crowded carriage and prompting an immediate police response.
The incident took place on the evening of Aug. 2 on the Tamsui-Xinyi Line near Zhongshan MRT Station. Several commuters believed they were witnessing the start of a possible violent attack after hearing the alarming remarks.
Videos and eyewitness accounts shared on social media showed passengers quickly moving away from the man, with some rushing into neighbouring train carriages in an attempt to distance themselves from the perceived threat.
Panic Spread Through the Carriage
According to witnesses, the man appeared to be engaged in a heated phone conversation and became increasingly emotional as the call continued. During the argument, he was heard shouting phrases including, “Are you sure you want to do this?” before yelling, “I’m on the MRT now. Many people will die!”
The comments immediately caused alarm among those nearby, with numerous passengers retreating towards both ends of the carriage. Some believed the man was about to carry out an attack, leading to a brief period of confusion and fear.
Footage shared online showed commuters rapidly distancing themselves while others attempted to understand what was happening. The incident quickly gained attention on social media, where users discussed the frightening experience.
Police and MRT Staff Responded
Taipei Metro Police said officers, together with local police officers, station staff and security personnel, responded after receiving reports of the disturbance.
Investigations found that the man had been arguing with an online seller over the phone and became emotionally agitated during the conversation. Police said there was no evidence that he physically harmed or attempted to harm anyone during the incident.
Although no assault took place, Taipei Metro exercised its authority under passenger transport regulations and refused to allow the man to continue travelling on the network.
Man Escorted Out of MRT System
Police escorted the individual and monitored him until he exited the MRT system at Minquan West Road Station to ensure the safety of other passengers.
Authorities also contacted the relevant agencies to assess his condition. Officials said he did not meet the legal criteria for compulsory medical treatment at the time.
Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage to determine whether any laws were broken. Police added that if any offences are established, appropriate legal action will be taken.
The Taipei Metro Police reminded commuters that anyone who notices suspicious behaviour or unusual incidents while travelling should immediately press the emergency communication button inside the train, alert station staff, or call emergency services so officers can respond as quickly as possible and help maintain passenger safety.
