A 27-year-old man will be charged in court on Friday (Aug. 7) after allegedly posting videos on social media containing insulting and profane remarks targeting the Muslim community in Singapore.
According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), officers received a police report on Mar. 1, 2026, regarding videos uploaded by the man that allegedly insulted Islam and Muslims in Singapore.
Investigations by officers from the Tanglin Police Division identified the suspect, but he had already left Singapore before the report was lodged.
Arrested Upon Arrival After Deportation From Malaysia
With assistance from the Royal Malaysia Police, the man was deported from Malaysia on Aug. 6 and was immediately arrested by Singapore police upon arriving back in the country.
He is expected to be charged under the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act 1990 for insulting the religion of another person.
If convicted, he faces a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Also Investigated Over Quran-Stepping Video
The police also revealed that the same man is assisting with investigations into another incident involving a video circulating online that allegedly shows a man stepping on the Quran while onboard a public bus in Singapore.
Earlier this year, on Mar. 7, 2026, the authorities issued five Disabling Directions to Meta under the Online Criminal Harms Act 2023, requiring access to the offending content to be blocked for users in Singapore.
Police Stress Zero Tolerance For Religious Incitement
The SPF said it takes a serious view of any acts that threaten Singapore’s racial and religious harmony.
Authorities warned that anyone who makes remarks or carries out acts capable of causing hatred, hostility, ill-will or enmity between different racial or religious groups will be dealt with swiftly and firmly under Singapore law.
The case highlights Singapore’s continued commitment to maintaining harmony in its multicultural society, with law enforcement working closely with overseas counterparts when suspects leave the country before investigations are completed.
