The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the incident at about 4am at 21 Mount Elizabeth, where the hotel is located. The fire was reported to have involved the contents of a kitchen on the second floor of the building.

SCDF firefighters subsequently put out the blaze using a fire extinguisher. One person was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital following the incident, although further details about the person’s condition were not immediately available.

An SCDF fire engine and a Red Rhino emergency response vehicle were spotted at the hotel, highlighting the response mounted by the authorities following the early morning alert.

The incident occurred while many hotel guests would ordinarily have been asleep, with the evacuation resulting in people gathering outside the building as firefighters dealt with the kitchen fire.

Fire Believed To Have Been Confined To Kitchen Contents

According to SCDF, the fire involved the contents of a kitchen located on the second floor. The blaze was extinguished using a fire extinguisher, suggesting that firefighters were able to bring the incident under control without requiring a prolonged firefighting operation.

At this stage, there has been no indication that the fire spread extensively beyond the affected kitchen area. However, the evacuation of hotel guests was carried out while the emergency response was underway.

The incident also highlights the importance of fire safety measures in hotels and other hospitality establishments, where kitchen equipment, cooking appliances and other materials can potentially create fire hazards.

Cause Of York Hotel Fire Under Investigation

SCDF confirmed that one person was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital following the incident. The circumstances surrounding the person’s involvement in the fire have not been disclosed.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

The York Hotel, located near Orchard Road and Mount Elizabeth, is situated in one of Singapore’s busiest areas for hotels, shopping and tourism. The incident took place during the early morning hours, when the presence of guests, including families with children, made an orderly emergency response particularly important.

Authorities have not indicated whether the fire caused significant damage to other parts of the hotel or whether normal hotel operations were affected.

Further information may be released as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.

For hotel operators and businesses, the incident serves as another reminder of the importance of workplace fire safety, regular inspection of kitchen equipment and effective emergency evacuation procedures. For guests, knowing the location of emergency exits and following instructions from hotel staff can be crucial during an unexpected emergency.
