Drunk Domestic Helper Kicks 83-Year-Old Employer, Throws Her To Floor, Gets 17 Weeks’ Jail
A 32-year-old foreign domestic worker in Singapore has been sentenced to 17 weeks in prison after assaulting her 83-year-old employer while intoxicated.
According to a report by The Straits Times (ST), Myanmar national Vei Nei Chong pleaded guilty to one charge of assault and was sentenced in court on Aug. 24, 2026.
The incident happened on Jul. 28 at a flat in Bukit Merah, where Chong and the elderly woman were the only occupants.
The 83-year-old victim had moderate Alzheimer’s disease and was fully dependent on her domestic helper for her basic daily needs.
Helper Was Drinking While Arguing With Boyfriend
According to court documents, Chong had been drinking beer while arguing with her boyfriend over the phone on the evening of the incident.
She consumed two cans of beer and became intoxicated.
At around 9.11pm, Chong began shouting at the elderly woman, who was lying in bed.
The situation escalated when Chong kicked a chair, causing it to hit the bed. She continued shouting and kicking the chair before picking up the victim’s metal walking frame and throwing it across the flat.
The elderly woman became frightened and attempted to leave the flat.
Chong allegedly pushed her and slammed the door shut before kicking her in the back.
Elderly Woman Flung To Floor
When the victim tried to leave again, Chong grabbed her by the shoulders and flung her onto the floor.
The impact caused the elderly woman to hit her head against Chong’s bed before she fell to the floor and became motionless.
A neighbour heard the commotion and alerted the police.
The victim was subsequently taken by ambulance to Singapore General Hospital, where she was treated for injuries including wounds to her left arm and leg and a bruise on her scalp.
She remained hospitalised for around two weeks.
The case has raised concerns over the protection of vulnerable elderly people who rely heavily on domestic caregivers for their daily needs.
Helper Sentenced To 17 Weeks’ Jail
The court heard that Chong had been responsible for caring for the elderly woman, making the assault particularly serious given the victim’s age, medical condition and dependence on her caregiver.
Chong was ultimately sentenced to 17 weeks’ jail after pleading guilty.
Under Singapore law, assaulting a vulnerable victim can carry a maximum sentence of six years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both, depending on the circumstances of the case.
The incident also highlights the importance of ensuring that elderly residents who require extensive care are protected from abuse and that warning signs of caregiver stress or violent behaviour are addressed before situations escalate.
