So my family went to park today, right? We’re just walking along the canal, enjoying the fresh air, when suddenly we spot a group of creatures swimming and doing little flips in the water.
Naturally, the rest of Singapore knows what they are. Every tourist knows what they are. Even the primary school kids on excursion know what they are.
It’s the Bishan otter family.
My dad, however? Absolute brain lag.
He stops dead in his tracks, points at them with 100% unearned confidence, and goes, “Wah look! Got beaver!”
I looked at him. My mom looked at him.
I was like, “Pa, those are otters. Beavers don’t even live in Singapore. Beavers build wooden dams, these guys are eating local ikan.”
He refused to back down. He was so convinced that he hits me with the classic Boomer ultimate move: “Don’t try to teach your father. I live longer than you, I know what is a beaver. You want to bet? $500!”
Bro. I am 18 years old. I have zero income and a dream of getting a PS5 Pro. My eyes literally lit up with dollar signs.
I asked him three times if he was sure, and he literally pulled out his wallet to prove he meant business.
I pulled out my phone, typed “Singapore Bishan canal animals”, opened Wikipedia, and held the screen two inches from his face.
The silence that followed was GLORIOUS. The absolute defeat on his face as he realized he just paid half a thousand dollars for misidentifying local wildlife. He tried to claim “they look very similar what!”, but a deal’s a deal.
Easiest $500 of my life. Playstation fund is fully funded, sponsored by my dad’s stubbornness and the Bishan Otter Family. Thank you otters, I owe you guys a tilapia. 🦦💰🎮
