A 16-year-old boy and his 39-year-old mother, both Uzbekistan nationals, have been arrested over separate shop theft cases at Changi Airport.
The Singapore Police Force said the pair were allegedly involved in thefts from retail outlets located within the airport’s transit area.
They are expected to be charged in court on Sep. 16, 2026.
Teenager allegedly stole sunglasses worth S$1,462
Police were alerted to a shop theft at a retail outlet in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 2 at about 6.46pm on Aug. 28.
A retail assistant had discovered that three pairs of sunglasses were missing from a display shelf.
CCTV footage showed that a male teenager allegedly took the three pairs of sunglasses, worth S$1,462.38, at around 6.28pm before leaving the shop without paying.
Officers from the Airport Police Division subsequently used CCTV footage to identify and locate the teenager and his mother before they departed Singapore.
The three pairs of sunglasses were recovered, along with other items believed to have been stolen.
Teen linked to six retail thefts
Further police investigations found that the teenager was allegedly responsible for stealing various items worth a total of S$4,887.03 from six retail outlets within the airport’s transit area.
His mother was also allegedly involved in a separate theft.
Police said she had allegedly taken a box of perfume worth S$149.90 from a retail store. She also allegedly received one of the stolen pairs of sunglasses from her son.
The teenager is set to face six charges of theft in dwelling, while his mother will be charged with one count of theft in dwelling and one count of receiving stolen property.
The offence of theft in dwelling carries a potential sentence of up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
For receiving stolen property, an offender may face up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The charges are allegations, and the accused persons will have the opportunity to respond to them in court.
