Ex-MP Amrin Amin’s Foodpanda Halloween Costume Sparks Debate In Singapore

Ex-MP Amrin Amin’s Foodpanda Halloween Costume Sparks Debate In Singapore

Former Member of Parliament Amrin Amin has drawn mixed reactions online after dressing up as a Foodpanda delivery rider for a Halloween event.

Amrin shared a photo of himself wearing a Foodpanda shirt and pink helmet while attending the Chip Bee Gardens Halloween street party on Oct. 31.

He jokingly mentioned that he was still waiting for his delivery backpack.

Some Say Costume Was Tone-Deaf

In his Facebook post, Amrin also paid tribute to delivery riders, acknowledging how they continue working through Singapore’s heat, rain and haze to fulfil customers’ orders.

He urged customers to be more understanding when deliveries were delayed, adding that riders deserved respect.

However, his costume did not sit well with everyone.

Some social media users questioned whether dressing up as someone else’s actual occupation was appropriate, arguing that delivery riding was a real job rather than a fictional Halloween character.

Others, however, came to his defence, pointing out that people commonly dress up as professionals such as doctors, nurses and police officers during costume events.

Online Users Have Different Views

The debate has since centred on whether Amrin’s costume was harmless Halloween fun or an insensitive choice.

While some felt that the outfit could be seen as making light of the daily work of delivery riders, others viewed it as a simple costume accompanied by a message of appreciation for workers in the industry.

Amrin has not publicly responded to the criticism at the time of writing.
