25 Y.O HACKER ARRESTED. CYBER CRIME IS REAL!

312312312312312123A 25 years old hacker was arrested after performing unauthorized transaction with the victim’s credit card. The police media release prevention measures against hackers and cybersecurity essestials.

The Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of cases involving unauthorized access to computer material.

In October 2018, the Police received a report from a victim informing that his Paypal and Qoo10 accounts may have been compromised, and an unauthorised transaction for the purchase of a mobile phone was charged to his credit card.

Officers from Tanglin Police Division conducted extensive ground enquiries and established the identity of the man. He was arrested on 18 November 2018 along Gambas Crescent. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in other similar cases.

The man will be charged in court on 21 November 2018 with unauthorised access to computer material under Section 3(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act, Chapter 50A. If convicted, the man faces a fine not exceeding $5000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years or to both.

The Police would like to advise members of the public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Change your passwords regularly;
  • Use strong passwords with mixture of alphanumeric and special characters when conducting financial transactions;
  • Use different passwords for different online accounts; and
  • Keep passwords secured and confidential. Do not review your sensitive personal information to others.

 

In case you become a victim of cybercrime, take the following steps:

  • Preserve information stored

    in

    your computer as evidence;

  • Keep a log of all online sessions or print them out;

  • Save any related email correspondence; and

  • Report the crime to the police immediately at the nearest Neighbourhood Police Post or Neighbourhood Police Centre.
