SRI LANKAN NATIONALS CAUGHT WITH FAKE SG PASSPORT AT TUAS CUSTOM

According to a media release, 2 Sri Lanka national have been jailed 8 months for their involvement in forging Singapore passport and NRIC.

Pushparaj Kapil, 21, and Ramachandran Kriysso Prashad, 32 were convicted on 28 Apr 2020 and 04 Jun 2020 respectively. Kapil was convicted for having a fake Singapore passport and NRIC while Prasshad was convicted for helping Kapil to get the fake documents.

Both men were arrested on the 29 Feb 2020 at Tuas immigration checkpoint.

How they were caught

On the 28 Feb 2020, both men travelled to Singapore through Tuas immigration checkpoint attempting to catch a flight to Laos.

The pair arrived in Singapore via Tuas Checkpoint on the 29 Feb 2020 at around 6.30 AM. The ICA officer at immigration was suspicious of Kapil and both of them were brought to the office for further assessment.
The officers search the bags of the two-man and found counterfeit documents in Kapil’s Possession.

In ICA’s media report they said: “The identity card and the biodata page of the Singapore passport bore Kapil’s name and photograph, but the rest of the details did not belong to him.”

After investigations, it revealed that Kapil had paid $9,000 to a man known as sam in Kuala Lumpur to help me to travel to Canada in order to seek asylum. The $9,000 deal included fake Singapore passport and Identification cards.

Sam later approached Prasshad to help Kapil with his trip. Prashad managed to obtain the counterfeit document for Kapil with the help of his associate in Malaysia.

Under Section 37(1) of the Passports Act and Section 13(2)(b) of the National Registration Act, a person who knowingly has possession of a false Singapore passport or a forged identity card, respectively, shall be guilty of an offence.

If convicted, he or she may be sentenced to a fine not exceeding $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or to both. For abetting such an offence, a person may be sentenced with the same punishment.
