Back then, Singapore was hit with a serious bout of haze and our PSI hit 400 at one point.

Benjamin, along with 30 other youths planned to reach out to around 750 elderly people at Toa Payoh to distribute masks to them.

He said: “I knew the challenging living conditions when my late grandparents were living there and they were most vulnerable without masks and the haze raging,”

But Loh soon realized that he didn’t have enough money to fund the masks for the elderly at the time and he grew desperate, so he went to a resource portal where people pcould pledge resources and put up requests to community efforts.

Loh sent Paul an email requesting for $2000 and to his surprise, Paul wired him the money without even requesting verification.

Loh added that “with Dr. Paul Tambyah’s help, we managed to do our small part for the elderly, went door to door to do outreach education in dialect and also, brought that bit of warmth and hope for them in form of chrysanthemum tea and masks for them.”

Dr Tambyah is one of Singapore’s top disease experts, and is set to be the President of International Society of Infectious Diseases in 2022.

He is running for Parliament in Bukit Panjang Single-Member Constituency, against the People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate Liang Eng Hwa.
