COFFEESHOP IN WOODLANDS REFUSE TO ACCEPT 5 CENT COINS

A coffeeshop in Woodlands Street 32 placed a sign at their outlet stating that “In accordance with Section 13 (4) of the Currency Act, we hereby give notice that we do not accept (5-cent coins) as payment.”

A picture of this sign was posted on the Facebook group complaint Singapore which garnered many comments.

Here is what is stated under the Currency Act, which is sated in the MAS webpage.

“Under the Currency Act, retailers must accept payment in any denomination within the legal tender limits.  For 5-cent coins, the legal tender limit is $2.  If retailers do not wish to accept a particular denomination of currency notes or coins, they should display notices prominently at their premises. This is stated in the Currency Act.”
