Facebook user Xiao Mei shared on Facebook on how an individual whose name is Carol and how her local boss felt about hiring locals compared to foreign talents. Her boss gave his reasons for hiring locals which everyone would feel makes sense. And all bosses in Singapore should have a similar hiring practice.
Here is the full post.
“Hiring of Employment Pass Holder * written by Carol (HR Executive).
In Jun 2020, 1 of my bosses decided to employ an extra staff. So I asked him what is his requirement?
He said Singaporean preferred, can be degree or diploma holder. Fresh graduates welcome. [Due to nature of job and responsibilities, work permit holders excluded from applying.]
So I said, “Boss, I think we qualify for the quota to hire a foreigner.”
Boss answered, “If I hire a foreigner, the salary to pay a S-Pass holder is minimum $2.4K and an E-Pass holder is minimum $3.9K.
Why should I hire a foreigner with minimum salary guaranteed for him or her, despite experienced or not? Regardless of either pass holder type.
Do you know our Singaporeans DO NOT even have a minimum wage set?
Do I want to be FAIR BY HIRING OUR OWN or give the job to a foreigner getting a minimum wage set?
By the way, the one with GUARANTEED benefit is our government collecting foreign workers levy (from work permit and S-Pass holders) every month.
This levy is additional business costs to us and the money goes to government.”

On top of not having to pay any foreign worker’s levy for an E-Pass holder, the company saves contributing employer’s CPF to the Singaporean employee too.
Working out the sums?
No points for guessing who ends up being the cheaper employee to hire!!!
If only all Singapore employers have the same mindset as Carol’s boss?
We would not have to fight with foreigners for jobs all the time!
Unfair policies that decide employers’ hiring practices must be corrected!!!”
