
A 29-year-old maid was sentenced to 5 months of jail after she had abandoned her newborn baby in a recycle bin outside a landed property at Tai Keng Garden. She pleaded guilty to one charge of exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years old earlier this year.
According to the court document, the maid discovered that she was pregnant in May this year. She did not have the intention to keep the baby and tried to abort the baby by taking pills which did not work.
On the afternoon of 27 July 2020, the maid gave birth to a baby boy in the home of her employer. She then cleaned the baby and wrapped him with a towel before placing him in a shopping bag. The maid then left the house with the baby and place the baby in a recycle bin outside a landed property.
The baby was later discovered by the owner of the property when he was out smoking. The police were alerted and the baby was sent to KK woman hospital for treatment. The maid was arrested on the 29 Jul 2020 and has been remanded since.
According to the law, for her offence, the maid could face a maximum penalty of 7 years jail or fined or both.
