The Telegram group was created in November 2018, and was used to share obscene videos and photos of Singaporean women, as well as promotion of vice activities.

At its peak, the group boasted over 44,000 members and 29 administrators.

Liong, alongside 3 other suspects, were arrested in a police operation on October 14, 2019.

Liong’s laptop and his five phones were also seized, and he was uncooperative, refusing to provide passwords or access codes for his devices.

But Liong soon relented and provided the password for his account, “Crazy Rich Asian”.

A total of 8,139 explicit photos and 3,083 obscene videos were found on his devices.

Liong also developed a close relationship with a vice worker he always frequented, who then introduced him to a man known as Hua Ge.

Liong worked with Hua Ge to promote content from a vice website on social media as well as SG Nasi Lemak, and he was paid about $300 to $800 each week.

DPP Huo Jiongrui asked the court to jail him for 3 months and fine him $26,000, explaining that Liong would’ve have made over $11,000 from advertising the website.

Liong’s defence lawyer asked for a jail term of 1 month and 1 week, arguing that Liong was just uploading along with everyone else in the group.

Liong’s Lawyer then asked the judge if she could issue an order to prevent the publication of Liong’s face in the media, which the judge denied, explaining that public shaming was the inadvertent consequence of Liong’s offence.

District Judge Janet Wang noted that Liong was a first time offender who eventually cooperated with the police and gave a default 6 weeks jail term if the fine could not be paid.
