20-year-old Terry Tong Hong Zhi posted a fake advertisement online claiming that he is selling a branded watch for SGD$100,000. An interested customer responded to his ad and agree to meet him at Gerald Drive (Yio Chu Kang).
This robbery occurred at around 10:25 pm on July 13 2021, along Gerald Drive near Yio Chu Kang.
The 20-year-old young man posted on the Internet claiming that he has a watch worth SGD$100,000 for sale and then asked the buyer to bring cash to deal.
Tong researched online and look for models that are expensive, he then listed a Patek Philippe Nautilus on Carousell with a slightly lower market price. A 33-year-old Vietnamese national was interested for the deal and they arrange for a meet up at Gerald Drive.
The victim prepared SGD$100,000 in cash and place it in a bag and walks towards the designated meeting place. He then sends a text message to inform the 20-year-old that he has arrived.
The 20-year-old who was fully dressed in black coloured clothing and a cap approached the victim from behind under the pretence of running and suddenly raised the knife to try to cut the handle of the bag.
The victim hugged the paper bag and resisted fiercely and tried to fight off the youth, in the process the youth slashed his left cheek severely, causing his face to bleed leaving behind a 5cm wound before running away.
He was arrested two days later and charged in court.
Tong will be back in court on 7 April 2022 for his sentencing.
If he is convicted of armed robbery and causing hurt he shall be punished with caning with not less than 12 strokes and a minimum jail term of 5 years (Maximum 20 years).
