Fugitive Rape Suspect in Sibu Recaptured After Public Tip-Off
An Indonesian man who escaped from police custody while under remand for rape in Sibu has been rearrested following a swift and coordinated police response aided by public assistance. The dramatic escape, which occurred on Saturday afternoon (21 June), triggered a manhunt that concluded early Monday morning with his capture.
Suspect Caught Still in Lock-Up Attire and Handcuffs
The 25-year-old suspect, who was in custody at the Sibu Central Police Station pending investigations into a rape case, had managed to flee from lawful custody while on remand. His escape prompted a full-scale search by the Royal Malaysia Police, with the public urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings.
Sibu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili, confirmed that the suspect was apprehended at approximately 12.26am on 23 June near Jalan Terap. At the time of his arrest, the man was still clad in purple lock-up attire and had his handcuffs on, indicating he had not managed to change or receive assistance to remove them during his time on the run.
Facing Multiple Charges Under Malaysian Penal Code
The suspect was initially held in connection with a rape investigation under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which covers statutory rape involving victims under certain vulnerable conditions, and carries severe penalties, including a mandatory prison term.
Following his escape, he now also faces an additional charge under Section 224 of the Penal Code for escaping from lawful custody. If convicted, this offence carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Public Assistance Crucial in Recapture
ACP Zulkipli credited the successful recapture to vital information provided by members of the public, emphasising the importance of community cooperation in law enforcement efforts. He also urged the public to refrain from speculating about the incident, especially online, as investigations are ongoing.
This case serves as a strong reminder of the risks posed when suspects in serious cases manage to slip through security lapses. Police have not yet disclosed how the escape occurred, but internal reviews are expected to follow.
