An American man has been arrested in Bangkok after allegedly stealing items from a 7-Eleven store before attacking a traffic police officer with a utility knife, leaving the officer injured and requiring hospital treatment.
The incident reportedly occurred in the Sua Pa area on 22 August, when 29-year-old Alexander Troy Lopez was allegedly involved in the theft. A traffic officer patrolling nearby reportedly attempted to intervene after becoming aware of the situation.
Police allege that Lopez then attacked the officer with a yellow utility knife, causing an injury to his neck, before fleeing towards Sua Pa Plaza.
The injured officer was assisted by members of the public and fellow police officers before being taken to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration General Hospital. He was later reported to be in a stable condition.
Police Launch Search For Suspect
Following the alleged attack, officers launched a search for the suspect in the surrounding area. Investigators later received information that a man matching Lopez’s description was heading towards Suan Mali Roundabout.
Police searched the area and reportedly found the American man hiding near a temporary shelter close to the roundabout. He was arrested less than 30 minutes after the incident.
Officers also recovered a yellow utility knife which they believe may have been used during the alleged attack. The weapon has been retained as evidence as investigators work to establish exactly what happened.
Police reportedly found Lopez difficult to communicate with when he was first detained. Investigators said he appeared intoxicated and was initially incoherent and uncooperative.
An interpreter was subsequently brought in to assist officers, with English and Spanish used during communication.
Suspect Undergoes Medical And Drug Testing
After his arrest, Lopez was taken to Police General Hospital for a medical examination and testing.
Police initially filed charges including attempted murder of an officer carrying out his duties, along with an offence connected to the alleged robbery.
A preliminary urine test reportedly detected methamphetamine. However, authorities have indicated that any additional charge relating to controlled substances will depend on confirmation from further medical testing.
Blood tests and other examinations are expected to help determine whether the initial result can be confirmed.
The case could therefore face further developments as investigators await the results and continue gathering evidence.
Immigration Status Also Being Investigated
Thai authorities are also examining Lopez’s background and immigration status as part of the wider investigation.
The case highlights the potentially serious legal consequences foreign nationals can face in Thailand when accused of violent offences. In addition to criminal proceedings, immigration authorities may examine whether an individual’s visa or residency status is affected by the allegations.
Authorities have not indicated what Lopez’s immigration status was at the time of his arrest.
The injured officer remains under medical care and is reported to be in stable condition. Meanwhile, Lopez remains in police custody as investigators continue their investigation and legal proceedings move forward.
As the case remains active, allegations against the suspect have not been proven in court.
