Another “Zombie”: Linked to Unregulated Vaping Products in Malaysia

inked to Unregulated Vaping Products in Malaysia

A shocking video has surfaced from Malaysia, depicting a man losing control of his body after using a controversial disposable vape known locally as “Piao Piao.” In the footage, the man’s limbs convulse, his eyes roll back, and he collapses as bystanders rush to assist him. This alarming incident has reignited concerns over the safety of unregulated vaping products in the region.

Recurring Incidents Raise Concerns

This latest episode follows previous reports of similar incidents involving vapes laced with unknown substances. In May, another user—a woman—was filmed convulsing in a manner described as “zombie-like” after using a Piao Piao device. Health experts have raised red flags about the prevalence of unregulated vapes on the market, which are often contaminated with hallucinogens, mushrooms, or other synthetic agents.

A hospital insider in Malaysia recently revealed a disturbing trend: cases of vape-induced psychosis, aggressive behaviour, hallucinations, and seizures are increasingly being reported. These incidents are often traced back to illicit ingredients, such as psilocybin or synthetic analogues. One particularly alarming case involved a teenage student who collapsed from dizziness and fell from a school roof after vaping a mushroom-flavoured device.

Impending Public Health Crisis

Taken together, these incidents signal a looming public health crisis. In 2023, nicotine liquid was removed from Malaysia’s Poisons Act, leading to limited enforcement of new tobacco regulations. As a result, both youths and adults have unchecked access to potentially dangerous vape products.

Medical professionals are now calling for immediate action, advocating for tighter regulation of vape ingredients, flavourings, and packaging. They emphasize the need for clear age verification processes and urgent public education campaigns to raise awareness about the risks associated with vaping.

Need for Legislative Action

The recent Piao Piao episode underscores the urgent need for swift legislative enforcement, supported by real-time substance analysis capabilities. As long as these devices remain a black-market conduit for unknown chemicals, more individuals risk experiencing sudden and severe reactions. Malaysia stands at a dangerous crossroads, and the time for decisive action is now to protect public health and safety.
