The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a statement on Facebook that officers at Woodlands Checkpoint stopped an attempt to smuggle 525 cartons and 250 packets of duty unpaid cigarettes via a lorry registered in Malaysia after officers referred the lorry for further checks and found the cigarettes hidden inside furnitures such as matresses, sofas and refrigerators, among others.
The case was subsequently referred to Singapore Customs for them to follow up with further investigations.
The ICA also wrote: “This method of concealment is a cause for concern as similar methods may be used by people with ill intent to smuggle security items into Singapore.”
They added: “The ICA will continue to conduct security checks on passengers, goods and vehicles so as to safeguard Singapore’s security.”
