The Malaysia police have installed barbed wire beside the fence on the Tebrau Strait, along with 24-hour surveillance, after people were spotted illegally entering the Johor on foot near the Causeway.
A video emerged online on 16 June showing a group of people avoiding immigration checks by walking around the fence to enter Malaysia, with the video gaining traction and going viral on TikTok.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the chief minister of Johor, Onn Hafiz Ghazi, said that “yesterday there was a viral video showing our borders being infiltrated by those who are irresponsible”.
He further added that the Malaysian police are tracking down the people who entered Malaysia via the illegal route, and that barbed wires have been installed along with a canopy and 24 hours police surveillance.
Hafiz also discussed the issue with the Ministry of Home Affairs to resolve the “endless issues” at the immigration checkpoints.
He said that he hopes the ministry will be more serious in overcoming the issues impacting the Johor state and Malaysia.
