Situated across from the Ang Mo Kio MRT station, the construction is part of the upcoming Cross-Island Line. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) clarified that diaphragm wall construction, involving deep excavation and concrete pouring, is essential for stability and safety reasons.

LTA’s spokesperson highlighted the critical nature of the ongoing works. Circulars and door-to-door engagements aimed to inform residents about the construction’s necessity.

Noise barriers, shields, and restricted machinery movement at night were implemented to mitigate disturbances.

They said that the works had to be carried out continuously to prevent the collapse of the “cut trench walls” and “ensure the stability of the surrounding ground and building structures”.

On the noise, they have “put in place a series of noise mitigation measures, such as the installation of noise barriers and localised noise shields around the machines as well as work zones.”

The event also recognised two bank staff from United Overseas Bank (UOB)’s Bendemeer branch, Ms Grace Ng and Ms Jasmine Tay, whose actions and vigilance led to the arrest of a man who allegedly tried to scam an 80-year-old woman of over $40,000, as part of a larger Government Officials Impersonation scam.  

Ms Grace Ng, UOB’s branch executive had attended to the 80-year-old woman who was accompanied by her “grandson” at the UOB Bendemeer Branch with a request to withdraw over $40,000. She initially thought it was a normal transaction but noticed that the elderly woman had little interaction with her “grandson”, with both seemingly behaving like strangers. Ms Ng realised that the “grandson” seemed to only show interest in their conversation when she asked for details of the bank transfer. He also allegedly insisted on cash withdrawal when Ms Ng informed them that the withdrawal could be done via cheque or cash. This made Ms Ng suspicious, given that the elderly woman had said the funds were for the payment of medical bills.

Ms Ng’s suspicions grew when she noticed the hesitation of the “grandson” upon her request for identification and that he seemed to be holding a foreign student pass instead of an NRIC, while the elderly woman was a Singaporean citizen. This prompted her to immediately report the matter to her Assistant Branch Manager, Ms Jasmine Tay. 

When Ms Tay heard about the situation and noticed that the “grandson” might not be related to the elderly woman, she immediately informed UOB’s Fraud Unit. After observing that the elderly woman was nervous and reluctant to provide further details about her situation, they decided to call the Police.

When the Police arrived at the scene, it was determined that the young man was indeed not the woman’s “grandson” and had allegedly pressured her into going to the bank to withdraw the money when he had only met the elderly woman a day earlier. The man was arrested on the same day. 

Both Ms Ng and Ms Tay paid the elderly woman a visit the next day to check on her well-being and were relieved that they had intervened and prevented the elderly woman from losing her savings.

Ng observed that the pair behaved like strangers, with the man showing limited interest in their conversation. When offered the choice of cheque or cash withdrawal, he insisted on cash, adding to the growing sense of unease. The reason provided for the withdrawal, a medical bill, only intensified Ng’s suspicions.

Seeking clarity, Ng requested the man’s identification. His hesitation was palpable as he handed over a foreign student pass, a stark contrast to the elderly woman’s Singaporean citizenship. Recognizing the potential threat, Ng promptly reported the matter to assistant branch manager Jasmine Tay.

One such incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at the Lower Delta Road exit of the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) towards Tuas, where a car burst into flames, sending thick smoke billowing into the air.

An eyewitness who captured a video of the fire, shared the he was on his way home inside a bus when he saw smoke coming from a far after passing the Lower Delta Flyover, about 100 metres away from the Cendex Centre, where the Audi was fully engulfed in flames.

SCDF’s Response

The SCDF was alerted at about 1:25 pm, responding promptly to the vehicle fire. Upon arrival, the SCDF found the car fully engulfed in flames.

They then subsequently extinguished the fire using a hose reel.

In the aftermath, one person was assessed for minor injuries but declined hospitalization. At the time of writing, investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway.

Please I need some advice…

So I’m in my early-30s, and got married and moved out just recently. I have no kids at the moment and both my husband and I are working office jobs.

There comes the problem, my mom. She doesn’t live with us, but we do live quite near I guess?? 2 mrt stops away. She came to visit us a few times before, and most of it ends up with both of us frustrated and angry.

Firstly I would like to say that our relationship be4 I moved out was alright, I mean okok not super close but ok. So after I moved out sometimes I still visit her.

Initially when she said she wanted to come to my house, I was like quite happy you know, can show her around etcetc. Then nope, she was criticising about how the floor was not clean enough, scolding me when she saw even a strand of hair anywhere and telling me to control my hair (like wtf how am I supposed to do that), and then when she say junk food and instant noodles she was like ‘you alrdy so fat now you want the whole family to die issit’.

She always say I’m fat and this hurts alot, fyi my bmi is 20, is that overweight?? And people ask me why my self-esteem is so low. Until now in my 30s I’m still only wearing baggy clothes, never once wearing anything remotely showing the shape of my body, cos I grew up not liking it.

And then ofc we argued, that the cleanliness of my house is not up to her standard (she can spend the whole day cleaning), that I’m feeding my family junk food, that I’m eating too much, that it is due to my negligence that I have hair on the floor.

Then the next time she came, I thought it will be ok since I tried to vacuum before she came (and hide the junk food) and I really wanted to mend our relationship. But unfortunately, the same thing happened. No matter what I do she is unhappy, that I can never keep the house as clean as hers and I’m forever a fatass. I’m so tired that I really don’t want her to come by anymore.

I find it a struggle to take her out also, I tried once, and she was criticizing my food choices as always. When I was living w her I had to lie about my food choices to prevent scolding, if she ever knew that I went to kbbq or drank bbt I would have literally died. I know she means well, but only occasionally also cant enjoy, then what’s the pt of living?? Might as well go be a monk.

She will tell me to eat the same portions as her, like half a bowl of rice, and scold me when I get bbt or fried food or anything that serves slightly bigger portion than hers. Once in a while, also cannot eat. And I ended up hungry after gg to ‘lunch’ w her. I only ate half plate of beehoon and 2 spoon of vege btw (she said it was the perfect size for a meal).

She dont understand, she thinks that I should eat the same amount as someone in their 60s, that my caloric/nutrition needs are same as those of an elderly.

I feel so tired eating with her or even gg out. Lucky I moved out so I can cook maggie at home when I feel lazy or just crave for it. If I were still living with her, no junk food will be allowed. Maggie, potato chips, bbt??? Totally out of the qn, cant even eat once.

Anyone has the same type of parent here can advise?? Anything I can do or what? Or this relationship will continue to suck, since it is very unlikely to change her mindset. This is more of a rant anw…

It was earlier reported that a 39-year-old motorcyclist and his 9-year-old son who was riding pillion with him, were killed in a hit-and-run accident along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) on 11 November at about 10am.

In a heartbreaking revelation, according to Shin Min Daily News, the deceased father and son duo were part of a family of four, with the man’s wife also pregnant and expecting their third child, due to be born next month.

A loving father

Shedding light on the deceased, he was said to be a loving father who would fetch his elder son to football practice about thrice a week and would sometimes ride his motorcycle or drive instead.

On the day of the fatal accident, he had chosen to ride his motorcycle with his son instead.

The deceased’s brother shared that his parents and sister have since moved in with his widowed wife to take care of her in her grief.

The deceased had been riding motorcycles for 20 years and had always been a careful rider when he rode with his children, however his brother said that despite this, accidents can still happen as he appealed to the public for witnesses and footage to help the police investigations.

Hit and run driver arrested

According to SMDN, the hit and run lorry responsible for the deaths was later found at Block 662 Hougang Avenue 4, with the police tracing the heavy vehicle to an open carpark there following a 2-hour long hunt.

The driver, a 68-year-old man, was subsequently arrested for careless driving causing death.

I am not sure about other companies, but in the company I work for and in my department, when more than 2 people apply for the same leave slots, we decide who gets the slot by drawing lots. So this year, I got the slot of my choice (HOORAY!). We do this at the start of every year.

The past 2 years have been really mentally and physically exhausting for me and I am looking forward to spending some quality time with my family and friends overseas in June when it is the holiday season.

The problem is that another colleague that chose the same leave slot as mine and did not get it has been possessively dropping hints that I should give up the slot as she has to spend time with her husband and 4 children. An example would be when we are having lunch, she would sit uncomfortably close to me and show me her childrens’ pictures and talk about how she wants to bring them overseas and blah blah blah. Another time, she was in a foul mood for god knows what reason, looks at me, frowns and starts saying stuff like “you don’t even have any children, so why do you need that slot?”

Eventually, I had enough of being nice and told her that I won the ballot fair and square. What if she feels unhappy about it, to go HR and complain about it, which she obviously won’t cos it makes her look petty af.

Now she is going around bad-mouthing about me to all my other colleagues and still pestering (it’s been 4 months already my god) me which has taken my irritation to another level. Was I really the bad person here?

They were eating halfway when the mall’s security guard approached them and told them to move their Personal Mobility Aids (PMA) away, and park on level 1 instead of level 2, where they were eating.

As the result, the elderly couple were unable to finish their meal and decided to “dapao” their food to eat at home instead because they were afraid of being fined.

Their son then took to social media to shed light on the incident.

The Dining Experience

Arriving at the second-floor restaurant at 3:20pm on Saturday (11 November), the family settled in for a meal, with the elderly parents carefully parking their mobility devices near the service counter.

Ensuring the devices didn’t obstruct pathways, the family proceeded to order, and their food was served around 3:45 PM.

However, their peaceful dining experience took an unexpected turn when a security guard entered the restaurant, inquiring about the ownership of the parked mobility devices.

The Confrontation

Insisting the devices be moved to the first floor, the security personnel disregarded the elderly couple’s explanation about their difficulties moving about.

Despite the food being served, the security personnel insisted on relocating the devices, even issuing a notice to the family.

Explaining the difficulty the elderly parents faced in navigating stairs, the family requested to finish their meal first. However, the security personnel remained firm.

The Notice and its Impact

The notice left the elderly couple frightened, fearing potential fines and legal consequences. Terrified by the notice, the elderly couple abandoned their meal, choosing to leave the mall immediately.

Even restaurant staff, understanding the situation, urged the elderly couple to enjoy their meal slowly. However, the fear induced by the notice overpowered any desire to continue dining.

The fear of legal repercussions led the elderly couple to forgo their dining experience, taking their packed food home.

The restaurant staff, sympathetic to the situation, could only watch as the family hastily left.
