    PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE
    17 JULY 2023

Tan Chuan Jin’s letter to PM Lee

Dear Prime Minister Lee,

I am writing to resign as a member of the People’s Action Party, and to inform you of my resignation as Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Marine Parade GRC with immediate effect.

Recently, I made a mistake in Parliament when I uttered words which were rude and unparliamentary in nature. This was wrong and I have apologized publicly for it. I have also spoken to the MP concerned to convey my apologies. Deservedly, there has been much disquiet over my remarks. Many felt that I was not impartial. Others felt that it was conduct unbecoming of a Speaker of Parliament. Some have also called for my resignation.

When such mistakes happen, all Members, myself included, will have to apologize and withdraw their comments. However, as Speaker, I should have known better and held myself to higher standards. The issue at hand isn’t just about the mistake itself. My mistake raised broader questions over my neutrality and impartiality as Speaker. The credibility of Parliament and the Chair is critical and cannot be compromised.

For me personally, this recent episode has added to the hurt I have caused my family. I have let them down. We have spoken about my personal conduct before. There are areas where I have fallen short. I need to take responsibility for them, and help heal my family. We need space to recover and work through the issues. I have discussed the matter with my wife and agreed I must step away from politics and devote myself to my family.

I apologize to my fellow Singaporeans, residents, volunteers, colleagues and friends for having let them down.

I am deeply grateful for your leadership, support and guidance over the years, as I am for the friendship and cooperation of my fellow MPs in Parliament.

PM Lee’s reply

Dear Chuan Jin,

Thank you for your letter asking to resign from the People’s Action Party, and for informing me of your decision to step down as Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC.

I appreciate your admission that you have fallen short in the matter of your personal conduct, and understand your desire to step away from politics and help heal your family. I have spoken to you previously on this. You admitted that what you did was wrong and offered to resign. I accepted, with your resignation to take place after I had made arrangements to continue to take care of the residents in Marine Parade GRC and your own Kembangan-Chai Chee ward.

As for your recent remarks in Parliament, you have apologised both publicly and to the Member of Parliament (MP) concerned, and the MP has accepted your apology. But your uttering them as Speaker In the Chair made this a more serious matter.

1 am saddened that you are not leaving politics In happier circumstances. But your resignation is necessary, to maintain the high standards of propriety and personal conduct which the PAP has upheld all these years.

I therefore accept your resignation from the People’s Action Party with immediate effect.

I thank you for having been a member of my PAP team, and wish you and your family all the best in your next phase of life.

FIRE AT SERANGOON HDB UNIT, CAT FOUND IN LIVING ROOM AND RESCUED BY SCDF

A fire broke out at Block 243 Serangoon Avenue 2 yesterday, 16th July, causing concern and prompting a swift response from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The fire occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m. in a bedroom on the seventh floor of the residential building.

Upon receiving the alert, SCDF firefighters were dispatched to the scene promptly. On arrival, they found the flames engulfing the bedroom in a unit on the seventh floor. Acting quickly, firefighters used both a water jet and a Compressed Air Foam (CAF) backpack to successfully extinguish the fire.

Thankfully, no occupants were inside the unit at the time of the incident, ensuring there were no injuries to residents. However, SCDF firefighters discovered a cat trapped in the living room of the affected unit. The cat was skillfully rescued and brought to safety by the courageous firefighters.

As a precautionary measure, eight residents from neighbouring units were temporarily evacuated by the Police to ensure their safety during the firefighting operation.

Based on preliminary investigations, authorities suspect that the fire’s cause was of electrical origin, originating from the affected room.

SCDF’s statement

S’PORE REFRESHING NATIONAL STOCKPILE, MOH GIVING OUT 6 COVID TEST KITS TO ALL HOUSEHOLDS

0

The Ministry of Health (MOH) will be distributing 6 Antigen Rapit Test kits (ART) to all households in Singapore as the country looks to refresh their national stockpile.

The distribution will take place from today (17 July) to 30 September.

MOH Press Release

FIFTH ROUND OF NATIONWIDE ANTIGEN RAPID TEST KIT DISTRIBUTION TO BEGIN ON 17 JULY

The Ministry of Health (MOH) will distribute COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test (ART) kits to all residential households from 17 July to 30 September 2023. Each household will receive six ART tests.

  1. The ART kits will be drawn from our national stockpile, which was built to mitigate supply chain disruptions and sudden surges in usage. As the stockpile needs to be refreshed to maintain resiliency, the current batch of ART kits have a remaining shelf life of about six months.
  2. The distributed ART kits are expected to expire in the first quarter of 2024. Their usable period can still cover the year-end, coinciding with the northern hemisphere winter season, during which respiratory viruses including influenza and COVID-19 may spread more easily globally. Many also take overseas vacations during this period and the kits will help families to take additional precautions where needed.
  3. Everyone plays a part in being socially responsible. With the shift towards COVID-19 endemicity, Singaporeans are reminded to take measures to protect themselves and their families, especially seniors and medically vulnerable persons.
  4. Persons who test positive with an ART test should regard themselves as being infected with COVID-19. They should avoid close contact with others while still symptomatic, and may return to normal activities when their symptoms resolve. If there is a need to go out while symptomatic, they should wear a mask when leaving home, minimise social interactions and avoid crowded places. Those who are medically vulnerable or with severe, prolonged or worsening acute respiratory infection (ARI) symptoms should see a doctor.
  5. We encourage eligible persons to receive the recommended vaccine doses. Persons aged five years and above who have not completed their minimum protection of vaccinations are urged to do so. In addition, individuals aged 60 years and above and medically vulnerable persons are recommended to receive the updated bivalent vaccine booster around one year after their last booster dose. They can start to receive it from five months after their last booster dose.

MAN CAUGHT WIFE SENDING INAPPROPRIATE PHOTOS TO ANOTHER MAN

0

Hello, I’m still trying to process this whole thing. Last night while my wife was asleep I was going to turn on some music from her phone to help her stay asleep. We have always allowed the other to use and search our phones with nothing to hide.

Somehow I clicked on messaging then minimized it. Something gripped me about the message I saw though. I reopened it and saw a name I did not know. The message was very flirty with some face pics but nothing else.

I know I should of just put the phone down but I couldn’t I went through one of her apps I knew she used and saw a conversation with a guy and wanted to know how long they had been talking. At this point, my stomach was in the pit. As I scrolled up I saw messages calling each other cute names and even a couple saying she loved him by his name. I never got the top as I scrolled I found photos of her in nightgowns with a ‘toy’ between her breast and a picture of her bare.

Talking about how good his KKJ will be.

I woke her up to talk and she told me he lived in another country and that it was just a fantasy. She acknowledged she went too far but she has since not done so. She will not let me see her phone but I know I saw the message of flirting with at least 3 guys before I woke her.

She wants us to move on and work on our relationship but I feel a feeling I can’t describe and was looking for some help.

Edit. Forgot to add we have 3 kids together and have been married for 7 years.

I’m at work and I really appreciate everyone taking time to for advice

MOTORCYCLIST HIT BY LORRY, HIS HEAD GOT ROLLED OVER BY LORRY BEFORE STOPPING

In a distressing incident that occurred on Saturday (Jul. 15), a motorcyclist was involved in a collision with a truck at the junction of Jalan Buroh and Jurong Port Road.

The accident, which took place during the early hours of the morning, was captured and shared online, shedding light on the potential dangers of blind spots and road safety for motorcyclists.

What happened?

The accident unfolded when the motorcyclist found themselves behind a lorry at a red traffic light. As they waited for the light to turn green, the motorcyclist moved ahead of the lorry, unknowingly placing themselves in the truck’s blind spot.

When the traffic light finally signaled right turns for the vehicles, the lorry proceeded ahead without noticing the motorcyclist in its blind spot. The lorry’s front right wheel ran over the motorcyclist as they moved into the path of the truck, and it appeared to have rolled over the motorcyclist’s head in the process, with the latter miraculously surviving the impact and grimacing in pain.

As the collision occurred, the lorry came to a halt, and the driver opened the vehicle’s door. Meanwhile, the motorcyclist was left on the ground, visibly in pain and clutching their chest. Passersby witnessed the incident and quickly reacted to provide assistance.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the accident at 7:30 am and promptly dispatched a team to the scene. Upon arrival, the SCDF personnel assessed the motorcyclist’s condition and provided immediate medical attention.

The SCDF conveyed the injured motorcyclist to the National University Hospital for further medical treatment and evaluation.

  5. but this one not true. car can give way and wait . no need to always rush this one not F1 don’t need to test your reaction time immediately when light turn green
  6. I believed the truck driver didn’t notice him, no motorist parks in front of a big vehicle like this at the junction.

GIRL’S ONLINE DREAM DATE TURNS OUT TO BE A SHORT BALDING MAN

So I was chatting with this guy on tinder and things progressed so well we moved offline. Even before meeting each other its like he knew me inside out. You get the feeling he’s probably really the one when he could finish your sentence for you. When he could guess what you are gonna say next. Without exaggerating, I felt like I had found my soulmate. I looked forward to his texts and found myself smiling silly when it came. And his voice, mature deep with a hint of playfulness, unlike some guys with that annoying ducky voice. I have had 3 past boyfriends, but he already felt different. Without exaggerating again, he felt like my dream guy. Every piece seemed to fit. He’s a couple years older, a free thinker, a stable job, normal family, non-smoker, only goes for whiskeys & cognacs, and we have so much in common and connect so well.

So when this circuit break was lifted, I was literally almost dying to meet him. And met we did.

I almost really wanted to die.

He’s SHORTER.THAN.ME

The fact I could see the top of his head and I see a balding moon means he’s at least a good 5CM shorter than me. And I wasn’t even wearing high heels. And I’m only 167cm.

My past boyfriends were all at least 172cm. I had taken for granted he would meet this basic requirement.

Why oh why any God up there? Why are you so cruel to me? Why give me so much hope only to snatch it away like that? I’m already 33, my clock is ticking fast. What’s the use of giving me the perfect guy, only for him to be a shortie?
I used to sniggle at women whose guys are shorter than them. Is this now my punishment?

I made an excuse to leave after half hour. What would people think seeing me with a shortie guy with balding head? Most probably sniggling behind my back. He didn’t seem to mind, but I wanted to die.

Since then he’s turned from dream guy to nightmare. Pestering to meet again, asking why I’m ignoring his calls. Why can’t shortie get the hint? Go find someone in your shortie league.

I will rather stay single and celibate. Hell, I can even accept ugly or fat guys, but never short ones. No hobbits, dwarves or midgets.

MAN GETS INFAMOUS GREEN LINES AFTER PHONE UPDATE, SAMSUNG QUOTED $500 FOR REPAIRS

0

A Singapore man’s Samsung phone developed green lines on the screen after a software update. Seeking a resolution, he approached Samsung’s customer service for a screen replacement. However, his request was met with refusal, and he was told that the repair would cost him more than S$500.

The reason provided by Samsung for denying the free replacement was that the phone had been “tampered with” by the user.

The Green Lines Issue after a Software Update

The man, identified as Mr. Goh, experienced an issue with his Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G after a routine software update. Green lines appeared on the phone’s screen, rendering it unusable and causing significant inconvenience to Mr. Goh.

Concerned about the malfunction, Mr. Goh decided to take his phone to the Samsung Service Centre at Plaza Singapura for repairs on 5 June. However, his attempt to get the screen replaced for free faced an unexpected roadblock.

Upon inspection of the phone at the service center, Mr. Goh was informed that Samsung would not cover the screen replacement under warranty. Additionally, he was shocked to hear that the repair cost would exceed S$500.

Samsung’s explanation for refusing the free repair was that the phone had been “tampered with,” as Goh had taken his phone to a mobile phone repair shop to replace the metal trimming of his phone’s rear camera.

Unconvinced by Samsung’s claim of tampering, Mr. Goh tried to escalate the matter and sought further clarification.

He firmly maintained that the green lines issue was a direct result of a Samsung OS update, not the minor repair he had undertaken earlier.

Despite acknowledging the software update’s role in causing the screen damage, the customer service manager stood by the decision not to replace the screen for free. Even after seeking advice from higher-ups, the stance remained unchanged.

With the green lines persisting on his phone’s screen, Mr. Goh found himself unable to use his device for normal functioning. Frustrated with the situation and the high repair cost, he considered filing a report with CASE (Consumer Association of Singapore).

Instead of taking immediate legal action, Mr. Goh hoped to highlight his predicament as he believed that others might have encountered similar challenges while attempting to repair their Samsung phone.

GUY HAS A LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH PARENTS – THEY DON’T LISTEN TO HIM

0

A netizen shared how he has a love-hate relationship with his parents because they don’t listen to reason or facts.

Here is the story:

“I have a love hate relationship with my parents. I care about them a lot, just because they are my parents. But I can’t stand spending more than an hour with them, and I finally realised why it is so (after moving out and reflecting).

My dad will just keep talking to me about religion and race – which makes me mad because he won’t listen to any reason or facts.

And my mom will just whine to me about random things. If I give my opinion or reply, they don’t care and mostly just cut me off so they can continue talking.

Either that… or they pretend they don’t hear me. it’s not really a conversation. I’m like a sponge . It’s suffocating.

The only decent conversation i can have with them is over WhatsApp, where they don’t cut me off and actually reply to me.

Is anyone’s parents like this?”

WIFE FOUND HUSBAND CHAT WITH ARMY FRIEND “INCLUDE SHOWER TOGETHER?”

0

It was a month ago, in December, when I first noticed something was wrong. I had been snooping around in my husband’s phone, and came across a conversation between him and his army friend. I was shocked. It was about buying services from two prostitutes—one of them a young girl.

My husband had been away in the army for the past few days, so I had assumed he was behaving himself. But this conversation made me wonder if he had been up to something when he was away.

I confronted him about it, but he denied everything. He said his phone had been hacked, and that the messages weren’t from him. He tried to convince me that he was innocent, but I wasn’t convinced. I asked him why he would be talking about buying services from prostitutes, and he had no answer for me.
