The decision to lower prices signifies a shift in IKEA’s pricing strategy. The chief executive of Inter-IKEA Group, Jon Abrahamsson Ring, emphasized that 2023 marked a turning point in their pricing approach.

This group, responsible for overseeing 12 IKEA franchisees worldwide, including IKEA Singapore, has taken proactive steps to make their products more affordable.

This move is poised to bring significant relief to consumers. As the cost of living continues to rise, price reductions on essential home furnishing products are more important than ever.

Gerard Jansen, the retail director of IKEA Singapore, revealed that some products, saw price reductions of up to 20%. For example, the price for their MALM chest drawers dropped to S$199 (US$145) from their usual price of S$249.

The Role of Inter-IKEA Group

Inter-IKEA Group, the global franchisor, plays a pivotal role in determining the range and supply of products for IKEA franchisees.

This centralized approach enables IKEA to implement price adjustments across multiple locations effectively. This global coordination ensures that price cuts are not limited to IKEA Singapore but extend to other regions as well.

The price increase implemented at the beginning of 2023 was primarily driven by rising costs in IKEA’s supply chain. However, since May, there has been a positive shift, with raw material prices and transportation costs moving in a favorable direction. These changes in the supply chain have enabled IKEA to reconsider and reduce its prices.

Customer Satisfaction and Financial Concerns

These price reductions resonate with the concerns of consumers about their household finances. A 2022 Life at Home report by IKEA revealed that 74% of Singaporean respondents expressed worries about their financial situation.

IKEA acknowledges these concerns and is dedicated to providing affordable options for essential and popular home items to help consumers manage their budgets more effectively.

While IKEA Singapore has taken steps to provide more affordable products, they did face a 2.0% decrease in revenue compared to the previous year. As of August 31, they closed their financial year with a turnover of S$384.2 million.

On March 23, 2020, Muhammad Afiq Senawi was operating a hydraulic press machine, a powerful industrial tool, at the Bishan Depot.

Tragically, during the operation, a spacer rod was forcefully ejected from the machine, breaking through safety fencing and striking him in the face.

The consequences of this incident were fatal, and Mr. Senawi was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and died that morning.

Safety Measures in Question

During a coroner’s inquiry in 2021, alarming details emerged regarding safety measures at the depot. The court heard that SMRT Trains allegedly failed to implement several critical safety measures:

  1. Pressure Gauge Installation: It was alleged that SMRT Trains did not install a pressure gauge for the hydraulic press machine after it was dismantled for repair.
  2. Hazardous Zone Demarcation: The rail operator was accused of failing to demarcate a hazardous zone, which would keep operators at a safe distance from the machine during its operation.
  3. Pressure Valve Limitations: The company purportedly did not limit the maximum operating pressure of the machine using pressure valves.
  4. Inadequate Guarding: SMRT Trains allegedly did not ensure adequate guarding for the machine to withstand the force exerted by a workpiece shooting out during operation.
  5. Interlocking Workpieces: It was also claimed that the firm did not ensure that workpieces used with the hydraulic press machine were engaged and interlocked to prevent displacement during operation.

Previous conviction

This is not the first time SMRT Trains has faced legal consequences for safety lapses. On February 28, 2017, the rail operator was convicted following an incident that resulted in the death of two individuals.

In this case, two trainee employees, part of a 15-member team checking on a fault related to switching equipment on the MRT tracks, were struck by a train near Pasir Ris MRT station.

The company was fined $400,000 for this tragic incident.

Legal Ramifications

The current charges against SMRT Trains carry significant weight. If found guilty, the rail operator can face fines of up to $1 million. The case has been adjourned to November 30.

  • they are sorting the parcels out accordingly by blocks. (not saying tht im ok of them throwing it around) but sometimes too overwhelm and thus such things happen.
  • Not nice to do throwing around. However need to consider that the sorting is unpaid time for the courier to do delivery. Although gig delivery, but really pay peanuts for the time spent packing and delivery time. Perhaps courier company can made effort to have an auto labelling for parcels that is visually easy for courier to see, plan his route and sorting. However consumers need to pay more. Can’t be paying peanuts but expect quality

  • Quite normal for them to sort out before deliver . It will take hours to sort then if slowly place them on the ground

Hi Just need some dating advice and maybe the opinion of sg men

I am a 25 F who had been focused on academics + career for all her life. Now just trying to get into the dating scene. Not having much luck in the workplace and so I have turned to dating apps. I am used to being chased, but things never go past the 3rd date where I lose interest or I notice something that maybe wouldn’t work if we get into a relationship.

Anyway, this time, I matched with a guy, like a 30 year old, with a work schedule almost as busy as mine. We text daily leading up to our first meeting and I thought we had a quite good time. (Nothing amazing, but it wasn’t horrible).

And for the first time, I arrived home with no “let’s do this again next time” text, which is a new experience for me. Because I wanted to meet again, I sent a “see u again soon? ” text and he replied with “sure haha”, which I tried not to read too much into.

After that, we continue to text somewhat daily. There are days I get too busy to return a text, and other days he’d do the same, but there was still continuation of conversations, initiation of new ones on both parts. But what bugs me is that there is no initiation of another date…

I tried to hint, saying that I have taken leave from work some time next week and all he said was “it is good, you do need to rest sometimes”.  I am pretty straightforward usually and wouldn’t mind initiating another date, but I can’t help but feel like maybe I needed to read the room?

I have discussed this with friends and their advice to me varies: from ask him out, maybe he didn’t want to seem desperate? To maybe he isn’t that interested, don’t waste your time. I have to admit, at this point, I am clueless myself if I am attracted to him or just bothered because he bruised my ego.

This has never happened to me before and I wonder if I am getting the taste of my own medicine. He is an attractive person himself, and so maybe I have met my match (pun intended).

My gym trainer Sarah was single, so I started talking to her. She was a great person and after a few weeks, I told her about the arrangement with my husband. She was skeptical at first but agreed as long as she got a few private nights with me. I told Mark about this and was hoping would put a stop to it, but he didn’t.

Things slowly spiraled out after that. I started spending a lot of time with Sara. She was a great person and an excellent friend. She introduced me to her friend circle and it was great. A guy shared a story about how he was approached by a chiobu insurance agent to buy insurance, and he ended up buying 3 plans because he found it hard to say no to her.

Here is the story:

“I have a problem, I turn into a r*tard when I meet beautiful women.

I am always being approached by insurance agents when I walk past mrt stations and whatnot but I always had no problem saying no.

Because they were all guys.

But then recently a chiobu insurance agent wearing damn tight and short skirt and a low cut blouse approached me and asked if I had 5 mins to spare her.

I thought to myself, 5 mins? I give you 5 hours ah.

I mean she was wearing a mask ah so I could only see half her face but her eyes disappeared when she smiles and I got sot a bit.

Then when we sat down at starbucks and she took off her mask to take a sip from her coffee, i finally saw her face.

Wah she really fking chio until i don’t know how to english.

I don’t know what happened but i ended up buying 3 insurance plans.

i bought a life insurance plan, health insurance plan and some savings plan that I have no idea about.
