GUY SCARED TO TELL HIS RACIST FATHER ABOUT HIS INTERRACIAL RELATIONSHIP

0

How to break the news about my interracial relationship to my racist father

I am Chinese and my girlfriend is Indian. Both our parents were immigrants, and both of us are citizens and were raised in Singapore. We have been dating for 4 years, and I want to marry her. I have already met her family, and although it was difficult for them to accept it at first, they have already come to accept our relationship.

The problem is my father is extremely racist, and I am not sure how to break the news to him. I would really like it if my father could accept our relationship and attend our wedding. However, I am almost certainly expecting him to get extremely angry and spiteful towards me and my girlfriend’s family.

I love my girlfriend a lot, and I don’t want my father to say anything that could hurt her or her family. But at the same time, I love my father a lot too. He has sacrificed a lot to raise me and my sibling himself, and cares a lot about our education and future. I care a lot about him too.

I’m prepared to hear all sorts of racist remarks from him to try and persuade me to change my mind. I’m planning to tell him that I am not going to change my mind regardless of what he thinks. Nonetheless, I would still like to continue being a part of his life and care for him as he enters his retirement.

I really want him to see that racism is wrong. Even though my girlfriend already knows about his behaviour, I don’t want him to leave a bad impression on her family. First impressions matter a lot, and his attitude might create tension between our families in the future. I just want everyone to be happy. Harmony is really important to me.

I don’t know how to convince him that his racist beliefs are wrong. Being direct about it is definitely not going to work. He is a very stubborn and unreasonable person. It is practically impossible for someone like him to change the way he thinks. Does anyone have any experience with this? I would really appreciate if anyone could share how they were able to talk some sense into someone like that.

CUSTOMERS EAT AT RESTAURANT NEVER PAY, STAFF HAD TO CHASE AFTER THEM FOR MONEY

0

Have y’all ever genuinely forget to pay in a restaurant after eating and just left like that?

So today, i went to eat at a restaurant with my cousin. The food was good and we were too full from it… so we walked out forgetting that we had to pay our bills.

The person in charge had to chase after us. Genuinely felt so bad about it because we walked quite a distance away from the restaurant without even realising or remembering that we had to pay…

even the person in charge had to chase us. Hopefully they know it wasn’t intentional sigh hahaha feel so bad

Netizens’ comments

  1. Yes.
Went to Saffron for some prata after circuit breaker and forgot that payment is made after the meal. Luckily one of the waiter noticed and called out to me before I ended up dining and dashing.
  2. Once. I was rushing between lectures and forgot to pay. I went straight back after the second lecture. As I approached, the staff was pointing at me and shouting “THAT’S HIM!” I explained and we all had a laugh.
  3. Yeah. It was a local family-owned establishment. The owners knew me as a regular so I just walked back and made the payment I forgot to. They didn’t give me grief, just laughed it off
  4. Did this in Malaysia. It was a cafe in a mall and idk why the guy didn’t accept payment first (we saw others ordering and paying), told us to just sit and have our drinks first.
We left and only realised it maybe 30 minutes later that we hadn’t paid and rushed back. And the guy had no reaction lmao just calmly asked us what we drank.
  5. Mine wasnt restaurant but at a prata shop. Twice in my life. They don’t take your money on the spot but after eating. The 1st time it happened, my colleague and I were in our police uniform. We realised and immediately walked back to pay
  6. Yes, was so engrossed in conversation with the friend I was dining with, we just walked out… Then next day I was like “hey did we pay?” and called the place to confirm we didn’t. Then came back to settle the bill and the manager looked so genuinely confused like “wth you could have gotten a free meal” lol

An incident occurred on Sunday involving a collision between four vehicles on the Central Expressway. Among the individuals transported to the hospital was a three-month-old infant.

According to The Straits Times, there were four cars at a standstill on two lanes of the expressway, specifically towards the Ayer Rajah Expressway near the Braddell exit and the Australian International School.

Land Transport Authority officers and two tow trucks were present at the scene, while approximately ten individuals were observed on the road shoulder near the involved vehicles.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the police received an alert regarding the road traffic accident at 12.20pm.

The SCDF conveyed five individuals, including the 38-year-old male driver and his four passengers aged between three months and 35 years, to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Police investigations are currently underway.

Other recent accidents

Just last week, an accident took place aloing Yishun that saw a 31-year-old man arrested for driving without a license and crashing into a lamppost.

He had also been driving the car without the permission of the owner.

The police were notified of a collision involving a car and a van at approximately 7:30 PM on June 5, 2023. The incident occurred on Yishun Avenue 6, heading towards Yishun Avenue 1.

The 31-year-old male driver was apprehended for operating a vehicle without a license and without the consent of the owner. The authorities have also reported that a 32-year-old male van driver is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

The week before that, a 27-year-old man was arrested for suspected driving under the influence following an accident along Sengkang, near the Rivervale Plaza.

He had crashed his car and caused a traffic light to collapse, as well as damaging a road divider.

Authorities were informed of the incident at 10:22 PM. Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the car skidded on its own while travelling along Punggol Road, specifically at the junction of Compassvale Drive.

Confirming the details, a police spokesperson stated that a 27-year-old male driver was subsequently taken into custody under suspicion of drink driving. The police are currently conducting further investigations into the matter.

In another separate incident, a 45-year-old cameraman who worked for Channel NewsAsia was killed on the spot following a fatal car crash in Malaysia.

Reports from the police indicate that Mr Khairul lost control of his motorcycle, colliding with a road divider. The impact propelled him into the opposite lane, where he was struck by an oncoming motorcycle ridden by a 46-year-old man.

Tragically, Mr Khairul succumbed to severe head injuries and died at the scene. The other motorcyclist suffered minor injuries and received treatment at Bentong Hospital in Pahang.

FROZEN LOBSTERS IN SG FROM “CAPTAIN DAN’S” RECALLED FOR HIGH LEVELS OF HEAVY METALS

0

Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has issued a recall for Captain Dan’s Frozen Cooked Wild Caught Cold Water Boston Lobster, imported by Lam Kee Fisheries Pte Ltd, due to the detection of elevated levels of cadmium. The presence of cadmium in the product surpasses the maximum limit set by Singapore’s Food Regulations.

As a precautionary measure, SFA has instructed Lam Kee Fisheries Pte Ltd to initiate a recall of the affected batches of lobster. The recall is currently in progress.

Cadmium is a heavy metal that naturally exists in the environment and can find its way into the food chain when marine organisms, such as lobsters and crabs, come into contact with water, soil, and the seabed. These crustaceans have the ability to accumulate heavy metals from their surroundings and diet. While the detected levels of cadmium in the implicated products are unlikely to pose an immediate food safety concern for one-time consumption, prolonged exposure to high levels of cadmium can lead to renal dysfunction, bone demineralization, and an increased risk of lung, endometrial, bladder, and breast cancer.

Consumers who have consumed the affected product and are worried about their health are advised to seek medical advice. For any inquiries, consumers can reach out to the point of purchase from where they obtained the product.

THARMAN SAYS JURONG RESIDENTS WILL BE OK AFTER HE RESIGNS TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT

0

During a media interaction on June 11, Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam expressed a mix of sadness and gratitude as he received well-wishes from the residents of Jurong. This interaction took place shortly after the official opening of ActiveSG Sport Village @ Jurong Town.

Tharman had recently announced his decision to step down from the People’s Action Party (PAP) and enter the upcoming 2023 Presidential Election.

When asked about his feelings, Tharman acknowledged his sadness, stating, “Of course, I’m sad. I think they will be very well taken care of, and I personally wish all of them well, both as individuals and as a community.”

Residents of Taman Jurong echoed similar sentiments. Speaking to Mothership, one resident expressed their sadness, emphasizing that Tharman had been a highly regarded figure in the area. Another resident shared that they would also feel a profound sense of loss, as Tharman had been instrumental in providing assistance during his tenure as their Member of Parliament (MP). Grateful for his contributions, the resident expressed heartfelt appreciation towards him.

Other residents echoed these sentiments, expressing their belief that Tharman’s absence would leave a void in their community, and they would miss his presence.

However, Tharman assured everyone that Jurong would be in capable hands. He expressed confidence in his fellow Jurong GRC MPs, Senior Parliamentary Secretary Rahayu Mahzam, Tan Wu Meng, Shawn Huang, and Xie Yao Quan, stating that they would work tirelessly to ensure Jurong’s well-being. He specifically mentioned their dedication to serving Taman Jurong as well.

Following his declaration about his intention to run for the upcoming presidential election in Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam posted a statement on his Facebook profile looking back on his time in the government, as well as made promises to the people about how he would be like if he is “fortunate enough” to be elected as president.

S’PORE COMEDIAN KUMAR HITS OUT AT JOCELYN CHIA, SAYS SHE “REALLY GOT ISSUES”

0

Prominent Singaporean comedian Kumar has joined a group of fellow entertainers and politicians in expressing disapproval of Jocelyn Chia’s remarks about Malaysia and the missing Malaysia Airlines plane during one of her stand-up performances.

In a video shared on Instagram last Friday, Kumar offered his apologies to Malaysians on behalf of Chia’s comments. He emphasized the importance of refraining from using stand-up comedy as a platform to channel anger and hatred, urging everyone to learn from this incident.

Directly addressing Chia, who was born in the US but raised in Singapore, Kumar advised her to seek help, as he believed she had some personal issues.

The 54-year-old comedian highlighted the frequent visits of Singaporeans to Malaysia for leisure and work. In his caption, he likened both nations to being “brothers and sisters,” emphasizing that any animosity created would be detrimental to their relationship.

Made fun of tragedy

During a stand-up comedy show in New York on April 7, Chia, an American citizen, made jokes about the MH370 tragedy while poking fun at the rivalry between Singapore and Malaysia.

In an 89-second video clip of her performance posted on Instagram, she humorously mentioned Malaysia’s failure to visit Singapore in 40 years, implying that their airplanes were unable to fly. The audience responded with laughter and gasps.

Chia added, “Why, Malaysia Airlines going missing not funny huh? Some jokes don’t land.” Flight MH370, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members, departed from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014 but never reached its destination. The plane’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Other entertainers weighed in

Other Singaporean entertainers, including Selena Tan and Sebastian Tan, as well as UFM100.3 radio DJ Huang Wenhong, have also commented on the matter.

Sebastian Tan, speaking to Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao, criticized Chia’s comments as vulgar and disrespectful to the victims and families of the MH370 tragedy. Huang Wenhong condemned Chia for exploiting the grief of others for personal gain.

Actress Selena Tan, in an interview with the Chinese Daily, stated that comedy often walks a fine line between humor and offense, as it involves observing sensitive real-life issues.

Minister also steps in

Chia’s remarks have also faced criticism from Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and the Republic’s High Commissioner to Malaysia.

Dr. Balakrishnan expressed his dismay in a tweet posted on Thursday, stating that he was appalled by Chia’s horrendous statements. He emphasized that Chia did not represent the views of Singaporeans and apologized for the offense caused to Malaysians, as Singapore values its ties with family and friends in Malaysia.

Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Mr. Vanu Gopala Menon, also expressed regret for Chia’s hurtful and offensive comments. In a statement released on Thursday, he clarified that the Singapore Government does not endorse words or actions that cause harm or hurt others. Menon emphasized the strong and multifaceted relationship between Singapore and Malaysia and stressed that Chia’s comments undermined the close trust and friendship shared by both nations and their people.

SOH RUI YONG OMITTED FROM S’PORE’S ASIAN GAMES TEAM, SNOC SAYS HIS BEHAVIOR CUI

0

Singaporean distance runner, Soh Rui Yong, has once again been left out of the Singapore team and will not be participating in the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

On Thursday (Jun 8), the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) released a list of successful appeals, which did not include the 31-year-old runner. This decision comes a month after Soh’s comeback to the national team at the Cambodia SEA Games, where he won a silver medal in the men’s 10,000m race and set a new national record.

Soh’s return to the recent Phnom Penh Games marked the end of his absence of over five years, during which he had several disagreements with the SNOC. These disagreements eventually led to his exclusion from the 2019 and 2021 SEA Games, despite meeting the qualifying criteria for both events.

SNOC told Channel NewsAsia that its appeals committee for the Asian Games reviewed Singapore Athletics’ nomination for Soh’s participation and decided not to select him. A SNOC spokesperson mentioned that Soh had not fulfilled his commitments to the SNOC, which included making “disparaging and derisive” remarks about others in public, even after his participation in the Cambodia 2023 SEA Games. SNOC found this behavior inconsistent with Soh’s previous apology and his assurance to conduct himself in a more positive and professional manner.

SNOC did not provide specific details about the incidents that influenced their decision.

Soh told CNA that he was keeping a positive attitude despite being left out, stating that he is focused on training well and building on the positive momentum from the SEA Games. He remains hopeful that he will eventually be selected and believes he can become the first Singaporean to break the 31-minute barrier for the 10,000m event at the Asian Games.

It is important to note that Soh was also initially excluded from the Asian Games lineup last year, despite being nominated by Singapore Athletics for the men’s 10,000m event.

The Hangzhou Asian Games, which were postponed from 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held from September 23 to October 8.

In its statement, SNOC mentioned that Soh was given the opportunity to represent Singapore at the recent SEA Games after apologizing for his past behavior. The appeals committee for the SEA Games 2023 also considered various commitments made by Soh and Singapore Athletics to develop a positive and respectable off-track profile.

Soh has been involved in notable incidents in the past, including a dispute with teammate Ashley Liew after the 2015 SEA Games marathon event, and a disagreement with SNOC over sponsorship regulations during the 2017 SEA Games, which prevented Team Singapore athletes from using their names for promotional purposes without permission.

XMM GOT ATTACKED BY BIRD AT MANDAI BIRD PARADISE, PECK UNTIL EAR BLEED

0

GO AHEAD TO SHARE TO CREATE AWARENESS.

On 9 June at Mandai Bird Paradise, White cockatoo attacked my gal suddenly. She was taking photo of something else when that bird flew on her shoulder and attacked her ear suddenly. I told her not to move as we wont know what will happen. I was quick enough to snap a photo as evidence at same time and quickly saved her by using my finger from further biting. Her ear was bleeding non stop. The flesh spilt opened. I was very traumatized while she was calm. She could not feel anything especially that ear helix. The biting on my finger was pain as the beak was very strong. Husband said he pushed away the bird as I was in shock saving her ear.

We had bad experience waiting for help as we cant say we are near or far from entrance. No rangers around. End up we got cleaner to help us call for help. Ranger took 15mins to respond our medical emergency. We ended up to KTPH for further treatment. I myself had to take jab to prevent further infection especially wildlife biting

The ranger mentioned that its not the 1st time that white cockatoo attacked people. Omg, its too dangerous as bird can attack anybody. Biting on ear and cause bleeding is serious matter. I even asked why never capture that bird since it can attack anybody. I even private message Mandai Wildlife Reserve to give suggestion on emergency needs because there was no rangers nearby, they dont seem to be interested on my suggestion and said someone will follow up. Hope this picture will show awareness if you are at Bird Paradise. Its not funny if bird fly on you. They can attack suddenly.

Just an update on 12 June:

1) Both of us are recovering well. Thanks for concern.

2) People are concerned why Mother can take a photo while she was bitten. We read that we need to stay calm when bird flew from her back. We cant frighten the bird as we wont know what will happen. We told her not to move, I happen to have my camera on my hand and had a QUICK shot while we watched in a sec what the bird gonna do. End up I and my husband dashed up to her, use my middle finger to prevent more bites on her ear and my husband to push the bird away. Our action and reaction had been quick and my gal had no idea being bitten as she got no feeling.

3) My gal never provoke the bird. She was standing far from the bird. From her back view, we suspect the bird mistook either her hair, her ear and mask loop. Nobody know what could trigger the bird.
