DELIVERY RIDER KILLED AFTER PMD CAUGHT FIRE IN WOODLANDS HDB LIFT, DEATH RULED “MISADVENTURE”

0

A delivery rider’s personal mobility device caught fire back in 2021 while he was inside a lift at a Woodlands HDB block, he suffered burn injuries and subsequently succumbed to his injuries and died.

At the coroner’s hearing on 29 March, his death was ruled by State Coroner Adam Nakhoda as a misadventure.

According to investigations, the delivery rider, 20-year-old Muhammad Irfan Danish Azhar, had bought a modified battery for his already-modified PMD from Carousell in December 2020 before the incident and changed the existing battery with one that has a higher voltage, according to The Straits Times.

This was because his friend had told him that his PMD could ride faster than the other approved PMDs.

on 2 June 2021, Irfan was inside the lift at Block 537 Woodlands Drive 16 at about 11.25 pm when there were “flashes of orange light”, followed by an explosion.

A resident living there heard someone screaming for his mother and later saw Irgan engulfed in flames, with parts of his body being charred.

Neighbours tried to extinguish the fire inside the lift with water buckets and police officers later found Irgan lying down on a staircase landing and unable to breathe.

He was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital by paramedics where he died the following day from smoke inhalation and burn injuries – he had suffered burns on 95% of his body.

The SCDF’s senior fire investigator, Muhammad Faizal Mazlan, testified in court and said that the lithium-ion battery pack may have overheated and that there was no battery management system included in the battery that would’ve prevented the overcharging and overheating that likely resulted in the fire.

The modifications to the battery pack might’ve also included a system bypass that lets it charge faster, and he added that “more current could have been drawn from the battery than expected, possibly leading to overheating”.

State Coroner Nakhoda also urged users to only buy UL2272-certified and LTA-registered devices instead of modified ones to prevent similar incidents in future.

MP SIM ANN GETS CALLED OUT FOR SHAKING HANDS WITH PUBLIC MEMBERS DURING SINGER’S SHOW

22-year-old local singer Bernice Lee (Benny’s) was in the middle of her performance at the Esplanade on 25 March as part of Panik Records’ showcase for the Esplanade’s Soul Jam series of live music shows.

However, midway during her set, Senior Minister of State for National Development and Foreign Affairs, Sim Ann, showed up at the show and was seen shaking hands with audience members in the front row, while Benny’s was still performing.

Her actions were called out by some members of the local music and arts commuting, who voiced their disapproval with her behaviour, calling it disrespectful.

Twitter user @hakiim_m_m_m was one of the netizens who criticised the act, saying:

you go watch show or talk to friend… go to talk at least sit behind la dont obstruct… better still go meet somewhere it doesnt disrupt art… im sure im missing some context but i cannot not see this as a disrespect to the artist

“worse is here is minister… and the connotation is traditional values, which respect is part of. ok la you can argue maybe its a small thing but to me, to many of us, it isn’t.”

“ministers alr got a bad rep when it comes to music scene eversince watain and blu jazz so this doesnt help them gain our trust. in fact its doing the opposite. just seems like they dk how to be sensitive to us”

“ok la the watain and blu jazz they got explain ah but this one how to explain? i really cannot wrap my head around this? basic human decency? huh???”

Organisers’ statement

The Esplanade and WWF-Singapore said in a joint statement that Sim Ann was the guest of honour for the Earth Hour Switch Off ceremony at 8.15pm, which was scheduled to begin after the showcase performance.

Sim arrived early and was ushered to her seat to watch the ongoing performance, and that the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre is a free and easy venue where audiences can enter or exit at any time.

They added that when Sim reached her seat, some audience members got up to greet her, and that “there was no intention of disrespecting the artists, performers, or audience, and we regret any disruption that we may have inadvertently caused.”

Sim Ann responds

Speaking to The Straits Times, Sim said that she was following the cues of the organisers and was greeting the people who were introduced to her.

She maintained that she was not trying to disregard the singer on stage bhy the manner of her entry and timing.

Sim also said that she has reached out to the artists involved to explain and that she is sorry for how things turned out.

She added that she “learned something valuable from the incident” and wished them “continued success in their musical endeavours”.

PRC WOMAN SAYS S’POREANS FORGOT THEIR ROOTS, SAYS “S’PORE & CHINA ARE ONE”

0

A video emerged online showing a PRC woman taking shots at Singaporeans and saying that we have forgotten our roots and pointed out how Singaporeans hate being mistaken for being from China.

She said in her lengthy video, ranting: “Did you know that Singaporeans hate it when other people say that they are from China?”

“The ones who just moved to Singapore, feel that Singaporeans and PRC Chinese are one, aren’t we fellow Chinese? We should look out for each other.”

“However I didn’t expect that Singaporeans would immediately turn on us and say ‘who is a fellow Chinese with you? I am Singaporean, not from China.'”

“After being criticised by the Singaporeans, the Chinese from China never dared to tell Singaporeans that they are fellow China-Chinese anymore.”

“Singaporeans don’t like to be labeled as being from China or originated from China, they only want other people to recognise them as Singaporean.”

“This is because it has been too long and they forgot about their identity, roots and culture from China.”

Netizens’ comments

GIRL SAYS GRAB & OTHER PHV DRIVERS DARINGLY ‘CROSS THE LINE’ IN THEIR CONVOS NOWADAYS

0

Private Hire Drivers asking for numbers. Is this becoming the norm?

Context

I’ve been commuting to and fro using Grab/Gojek/Comfort/Tada/Ryde/etc due to work and convenience.

As the commute to work is pretty long (approx 40mins), I usually prefer to stay quiet and mind my ownself but would typically respond and engage in a chat strike by the Grab driver to avoid being arrogant/rude which could also imply negatively on me.

Yes, I’m image conscious here given how it’s apparent where I work and complains might come in insinuating we are snobby or something along those lines. Silly I know. Not going to elaborate on this due to the nature of it as it’s not important to reveal it.

Sometimes I do enjoy the chatty conversations, but I realise that these days Grab drivers are getting more boundless as they would openly ask ‘hey I like ur attitude and the way u spoke! Can I get ur number so we can be friends?‘ Or ‘can leave me a miss call… so and so.’ Or ‘lets go out….bla bla.’

An example would be the one time I was commuting back from the hospital and the Grab driver casually asked what happened.

Somehow I mentioned that I haven’t eaten after a long day of admitting my family and he suggested to eat out together. It was midnight ish? I refused (obviously) and he asked if we could go out another day. At first I thought it was a kind gesture but soon turned creepy when I realised the intentions.

Of course it is nice to know that people enjoy your company and would like to befriend you.

But the issue is the lack of ethics to casually ask someone about something very personal or detrimental to their own safety and security.

It baffles me slightly how a stranger would randomly just ask and expect you to be okay to share your details likes age, marital status and own number. PDPA where?

At the end of the day, the line between a service provider and consumer is very blurred.

I’m not sure if this is controversial, or that people would have a differing opinion on this… but as a girl I worry about my own safety. Some of these Grab drivers are old/older men.

You feel cornered and coerced into succumbing, and you worry that refusing might turn things ugly. It is also crazy to think that these Grab drivers now know where you stay. I have some friends who experience similar situations and have qualms too.

I don’t mean to come across as offensive, and I am not generalising/insinuating that all the Grab drivers project this kind of behaviour.

There are many whom are nice and respectful, would even go to lengths of providing hitch services so it’ll be a cheaper commute to work. But some of these few bad apples are spoiling the bunch.

Am I overthinking or being paranoid? Do you guys have experiences to share? Have you ever felt unsafe too?

7 Y.O BOY HIT BY SCHOOL BUS & DRAGGED A DISTANCE WHILE CROSSING ROAD @ BUKIT BATOK

0

A 7-year-old boy was allegedly hit by a mini school bus at Bukit Batok and got dragged on the road for almost 5 metres.

According to Lianhe Zaobao, the boy was purportedly crossing the road at the time, in front of the mini school bus, when he got run over.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that on 27 March at about 2 pm, they received a call for help after an accident that took place near Block 386 Bukit Batok West Avenue 5.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) added that the accident involved a pedestrian and a minibus, and a 7-year-old boy was sent to the National University Hospital conscious.

A 57-year-old man who is the driver of the minibus is also assisting the police with their investigations into the accident, which is ongoing.

An eyewitness who was resting at a nearby HDB block told Zaobao that the boy went under the school bus after being run over.

He then shouted at the bus driver to get his attention, and the bus driver then stopped, but the boy had already been dragged on the road for a couple of metres.

The bus driver and his assistant then pulled the boy out from the back of the bus, and he was unconscious and covered in blood.

Zaobao reported that the boy’s grandmother was buying food at a coffee shop opposite the driveway at the time and was waiting at the side of the road to pick up her grandchildren after school.

The grandmother saw the bus driver pulling her grandson out from under the bus and was in a state of shock, bursting into tears.

The boy later regained consciousness and started crying, and an ambulance later arrived at the scene with paramedics attending to the injured boy, before conveying him to the hospital for further treatment.

The boy’s father also told Zaobao that his son’s body was covered in bruises and his face may have been fractured.

The boy is believed to have been wanting to cross the zebra crossing in front of the bus after alighting because he wanted to look for his grandmother across the street, but because he was small, he might’ve been in a blind spot.

MAN ASK HOW LONG HE SHOULD ‘LAST’ FIRST TIME WITH SOMEONE, SCARED HE ‘LAO KUI’

0

How long is long enough the first time with a partner?

Context

So I (36m) am in an open relationship. This is all still a little new to me. I have been talking to a nice woman (40f) who lives in the area and I’m hoping to get together/hookup in the next month or two.

So we were talking about things and she warned me that she is someone that ‘shoots water’. I think she was afraid I’d be turned off.

But, I’m actually very excited. I’ve always wanted to experience being ‘shot water’ on. She said it’s “slippery s-”.

So being that I’m excited, I’m afraid I’ll finish too early. I’ll do all I can to focus on her pleasure. But I’m still nervous I’ll blow it. I can definitely go more than one round, and want to.

So I have this question for women. How long would you like a man to last the first time when you all are doing it together?

Do you forgive a man if he finishes too early as long as he makes you shiok as well?

Here are what netizens think

  • Stop worrying about your D because it doesn’t matter. S- should not end when you finish or your dick goes soft. You need to keep pleasing her with your fingers, mouth and toys.

Also, you should be making her finish before you get to put your D inside her. So this idea of worrying about finishing before she shoots water should not be something you worry about because your fingers, mouth and toys won’t ever go soft.

So make her shoot water with all the other options before you put your D inside her. Then F her until you finish.

Then use your fingers on her again until your hand is in pain and needs a break then switch to be your other hand. Keep doing this until she says she needs a break from finishing so much.

Then when she’s ready again make her finish some more. Just because your D can’t last for 10 hours it doesn’t mean you can’t spend 10 hours making her finish.

Don’t worry about your D cause after you make her finish with all the other options she will be wanting to play with your D as a way to give her ‘cat’ a break.

Plus you could always wear a strap on to keep f-ing her.

MAN OFFERED ‘SUPERVISOR’ ROLE WITH NO SALARY INCREMENT, ACCEPTED IT BECAUSE WANT NICE RESUME

0

I have $14 in my bank account and I just took a “promotion” to a Supervisor role where I’ll make less money and be required to do more work just so I can put the position on my resume.

Context

I’ve been working at a company for about a year and a half as a team lead. When I was hired I was brought on with the intention of me becoming a second shift supervisor once they could hire enough people to add a second shift.

For the last 18 months I’ve been doing everything that my managers have asked, taking personal development classes online (how to be a good leader, how to delegate, how to communicate with under performing employees, etc), started sitting in on interviews and one on ones, taking on and managing bigger projects, etc.

Essentially proving to them that I can handle the extra work.

Well the day finally came, I got called into my boss’s boss’s office, they sat me down and presented me with an offer letter. I was so excited!! I read through it and finally found the number I was looking for (and let’s be honest, it’s the most important number), my offered salary.

My heart sunk, I wanted to throw up. Seeing as I had just done my taxes, I knew immediately that the offer was less than what I made last year.

With all of the overtime I was putting in, I apparently made more than what some supervisors were making.

I explained to them that if I took the job I would be taking a pay cut. They didn’t care. “It wouldn’t be fair to other supervisors if you came in at a higher rate.”

So i asked “Ok, can I get more vacation days?”

I got the reply: “Vacation days are the same throughout the office and are non-negotiable.”

I told them I needed to think about it and they said sure. I came in this morning and was immediately confronted by my boss asking for an answer.

He said: “I need a decision by noon otherwise we’re posting the open supervisor position.”

So with tears in my eyes I signed the offer letter.

After I left their office I went to sit in my car and cry. I didn’t want anyone to see me so I drove to a restaurant down the street. I got so upset that I decided “screw it, I need a beer before I go back to work.”

Being that I’m 2 days away from payday I decided I should check to make sure I had enough money for petrol and a pint before I go in, only to discover I have $14 to my name.

MAS TAKING ACTION AGAINST DBS FOR ONLINE BANKING DISRUPTIONS, CALLS IT “UNACCEPTABLE”

0

Following the recent disruption of DBS’ online banking services, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) will be taking action against the bank.

MAS called DBS’ disruption “unacceptable” and has instructed DBS to conduct a thorough investigation to establish the root cause of the disruption, and to submit the findings of their investigation to MAS.

MAS added that DBS “has fallen short of MAS’ expectations to maintain high system availability and ensure its IT systems are recovered expeditiously.”

Background

On March 29, DBS clients experienced difficulties using the bank’s digital platforms, such as the DBS PayLah! app, DBS iBanking etc.

According to Downdetector, over 1,000 reports have been made from 8 AM to 11 AM, and as of 11.15 AM the service has not recovered.

DBS’ Facebook statement

“Access to digital services (digibank Online and Mobile, PayLah!) is currently unavailable. We are resolving the issue and will update as soon as services are recovered.

Customers can continue to use their DBS/POSB cards for transactions. Please be assured that our systems remain secure and uncompromised. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused.”

MAS Statement on Disruption of DBS’ Digital Banking Services

Singapore, 29 March 2023…DBS notified MAS early this morning that its customers were experiencing difficulties logging in to its digital banking services.

MAS has been in close contact with DBS to ensure expedited recovery of its digital services and timely communications to customers on the disruption. We note the bank has since resumed normal digital banking services and is monitoring the situation.

2. MAS takes seriously the reliability of banks’ critical IT systems.

3. Today’s disruption of DBS’ digital services is unacceptable, coming a year after a similar incident in November 2021.

DBS has fallen short of MAS’ expectations to maintain high system availability and ensure its IT systems are recovered expeditiously.

MAS has instructed DBS to conduct a thorough investigation to establish the root cause of the disruption and submit its investigation findings to MAS.

MAS will take the commensurate supervisory actions after gathering the necessary facts.
