A Singaporean man, Foo Maosheng, shared in an Instagram post about the insects that he has been eating as he said that he is in favour of the Singapore Food Agency allowing the import of insects for human consumption.

Here is what he said

You probably have heard the latest buzz that SG Food Agency is going to allow the import of insects (16 species) for human consumption.

I understand that some people are gross out about it (for me, I am in favour).

We need a new source of food especially protein. As you can already see, the prices of chicken, fish, eggs are going up plus we are getting less space to grow food not just locally but also globally.

We need another source where it is more sustainable, and less effort in growing and that is precisely insects.

Looks like more education is coming and needed for Singapore.

CONSULTATION ON REGULATION OF INSECT AND INSECT PRODUCTS (IMPORTS AND LOCALLY FARMED/PROCESSED)

Aim
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is seeking feedback from the food and animal feed industry, as well as interested parties, on the proposal to allow insects for human consumption and as animal feed, subject to specific food safety requirements and conditions. This applies to both imported, as well as locally farmed and processed insects.

Background
The import and sale of insects as food for human consumption is presently not allowed, while the import and sale of animal feed containing insects is currently permitted under the Feeding Stuffs Act (FSA). SFA currently permits only approved substrates for use (mainly homogenous plant-based waste) on insects for animal
feed.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has completed a review of the regulatory position for insects and insect products. With this, SFA will permit the import and sale of insects and insect products for human consumption and animal feed, subject to the import conditions (paragraph 6) for imports, and additional pre-licensing requirements (paragraphs 7 and 8) for local farming and processing of insects and insect products.

These changes will allow industry more flexibility to produce insects in a safe and sustainable way, particularly in the range of substrates which can be used. Consumers would also have access to safe insect food products.

Presently, there are no international standards set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission or the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) for insects as food or animal feed. SFA’s proposed import conditions and additional pre-licensing requirements for farming and processing in Singapore are based on four identified key
points to ensure safety of the insects and insect products:

a. Species of insect is safe for human consumption
b. Prevent the introduction of diseases and contaminants
c. Substrate used must not impart contaminants to the insects
d. The final product is safe for consumption

63 Y.O MAN CHARGED FOR DROPPING LIT CIGARETTE @ TAMPINES FLAT & CAUSING FIRE

63-year-old Loh Fu Wah was charged earlier today (12 December) for causing a hire at a HDB unit in Tampines by dropping a lit cigarette on a bedroom floor, according to CNA.

He was charged with negligently causing a fire at a 10th-floor unit at Block 941 Tampines Avenue 5 on 28 January at about 10.29pm.

There was kerosene on the floor at the time when he dropped his cigarette on the floor, and the resultant fire caused damage to the unit and the common corridor.

He will be pleading guilty and is set to return to court on 17 January 2023.

At about 10.30pm yesterday (28 Jan), SCDF was alerted to a fire at the above-mentioned location.

Upon SCDF’s arrival, the fire was raging and had totally engulfed a two-storey unit on the 10th floor.

Firefighters from Tampines Fire Station and Changi Fire Station had to conduct forcible entry to gain access into the unit.

While conducting firefighting operations within the unit, firefighters also conducted forcible entry into a bedroom on the first storey, and found a man lying unconscious on the floor. The firefighters immediately rescued him out of the burning unit.

An SCDF ambulance crew assessed the rescued man and conveyed him to Changi General Hospital.

The fire, which involved contents of the entire unit, was extinguished with two water jets.

About 180 people from neighbouring units were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

TikTok user @saltyseadawg shared a “warning” video warning others to be careful when travelling to Bali in Indonesia.

She urged travellers to be careful in Nusa Penida, Bali, as she called the island dangerous, citing the island’s tides and cliffs.

She described an incident where a tourist had fallen off the cliff while doing a somersault for a photo, as she drew flak for calling the country a “third world country”.

Netizens commented that to be fair, the incident could’ve happened anywhere else, as others questioned why the tourist was doing somersaults on the cliff.

The woman shared that she had went to a lookout point on the island on 21 November at about 10am, where a guide told them about an incident that happened just an hour ago where a man had fallen off the cliff while doing a somersault for a photo.

He fractured his leg and emergency services couldn’t reach him until about 4pm because of the dangerous tides and terrain.

She said: “Be careful when you are in a Third World country because things happen like this all the time and are just never reported about.”

Some netizens took offence at her comments and said that the risks don’t just apply to third world countries.

Currently experience terrible service with Chan Brothers Travel where my entire NZ tour group is being stranded for 2 days without a return flight home.

Chan Brother representatives keep telling us they’re waiting for the Air NZ airlines to get back to them and expect us to wait and wait instead of booking the next available flight back using other available airlines.

Highly unprofessional and horrible standard of service. Advice to everyone to not take any travel tour from this irresponsible agency. BE WARNED

They have no sense of urgency and will keep you waiting without any contingency plan at all

  • No one hopes for events like this, I suggest,
    1) look at the t&c of Chan brothers, and in such event what are their liability.
    2) look at your insurance coverage (I am very sure even the best insurance doesn’t involve booking an alternate flight at their cost to get you back to your destination)
    3)let the poor guide get back to you in due time, and spamming the contact hotline at Saturday 10pm+ and expecting them to response immediately is quite entitled isn’t it.
    Hope you are not trying to make a big fuss to get a nice refund or compensation.
  • Booking another flight back will incur additional cost which is the bulk of the fee they charge. I doubt any tour agency will do that for their customers.
  • Can feel the frustration u guys been through. Hope everything be smooth for u guys to be back in sg safely.. stay safe n take care

MAN ARRESTED FOR SPITTING AT MINIMART OWNER BECAUSE HIS PAYNOW TRANSACTION FAILED

A man was trying to use PayNow to make payment for a pack of cigarettes at a minimart when his transaction couldn’t go through.

Unhappy, the man then allegedly spat at the owner of the store, Mr Lee and cursed at his pregnant wife, and was later arrested by the police, according to Shin Min Daily News.

The incident took place at 332 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 on 10 December at about 8am, and the minimart owner’s wife was manning the store at the counter, while her husband was upstairs resting.

The man entered the store with a beer in his hand and went to the counter to buy some cigarettes, but he couldn’t specify what kind of cigarettes he wanted, as he started losing patience.

Lee’s wife then recommended a cigarette flavour to the man and he then tried to use PayNow to pay for it, but as he scanned the QR code, the transaction wouldn’t go through.

The man then shouted at the woman, and she then called her husband for help.

Lee then heard the man shouting at his wife and he smelled alcohol on the man, as well as noticing the he couldn’t stand properly.

Lee then asked the man to calm down but he refused and Lee then asked him to leave after refusing to sell him anything.

The man then threatened Lee and allegedly reached out his arms towards him, waving his fist at him and saying “don’t think I don’t dare to hit you, I can kill you with one punch.”

Lee then returned the cigarettes that the man failed to buy and called the police, and when he turned back around to face the man, the man allegedly spat on him.

Lee’s wife then took a photo as evidence as the man then finally left the scene after 10 minutes.

Lee then followed the man to a nearby coffeeshop where he tried to buy beer via PayNow and failed as well, before he went to the park as he continue provoking Lee.

The man continued being aggressive when the police arrived and was talking loudly on the phone and slamming his mobile on the table at a coffeeshop, according to the coffeeshop owner Mr Xie.

He was subsequently arrested by the police.

Stealing from the elderly

Elderly people are particularly vulnerable to theft due to their age and physical frailty. They may not be able to respond quickly to theft and may be more trusting than someone who is younger such as her maid.

According to Shin Min Daily News, a 76-year-old woman became a victim of such a crime.

A 41-year-old Maid by the name of Faridah was employed to take care of the elderly woman, every now and then the elderly employer instruct Faridah to go withdraw money from her card.

Instead of just helping the elderly draw money, she was drawing more for her own.

The first time she drew $500 for herself and got more and more brazen and eventually drew a total of $12,000 from her employer.

How she was caught?

The elderly woman started to notice that her maid was making expensive purchases such as clothing and even steaks.

The maid lied to the elderly woman claiming that she had won the lottery. The maid even started to grow an appetite and refused to eat ‘non-premium’ food.

In September 2022, the elder woman tried to withdraw $300 from her bank account but it was rejected as she had less than $300 left in her account.

She immediately confronted her maid who beg for mercy.

However, the family members urged the elderly woman to make a report and the maid was arrested the following day.

She was eventually sentenced to 7 months in jail.

Theft

The offence of theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 carries a jail term of up to 3 years, or a fine, or both.

A man in Malaysia recently ordered a pizza from Domino’s and when he received his order, he found something else with his pizza inside his order.

He found a dirty pizza cutter on his pizza inside the box.

The netizen, @fslshf, shared the photo of his unorthodox pizza order on Twitter, saying (SIC):

“Hi @DominosMY, while i appreciate the efficiency that the you guys have shown for my order sebab weather was bad… I’m pretty sure I didn’t order the pizza cutter”

He had placed the order on 10 December, and it was delivered promptly and on time by a delivery rider despite the adverse weather.

I can’t believe I did it. I had just had enough of my boyfriend’s partying ways and I was determined to put a stop to it.

So, one day, when he was out at work, I took it upon myself to make sure he wouldn’t be able to go out and drink with his friends that night.

I knew he had a bottle of beer he was planning to drink later, so I took it and spiked it with a laxative.

Let me explain why I felt the need to do this. My boyfriend has always been a very social person, but lately he had been out drinking with his friends almost every night.

It was taking a toll on our relationship and making me worry about his health. I had tried to talk to him about it, but he just brushed it off and said he was fine.

So, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

At first, I was really scared. I was worried I was going to get in trouble or that he would be really mad at me. But, I knew I had to do something to keep him from drinking, so I went through with it. I opened the beer, poured in the laxative, and put the bottle back in the refrigerator.

I waited for him to come home and he went straight for the beer. He opened it, took a sip, and immediately made a face. I was so sure he had noticed something, but he said nothing. He finished off the beer, set the empty bottle down, and went to shower.

He did not even realise that the bottle cap was loose.

I asked him if he was feeling okay and he said he was fine. Little did he know, I had spiked his beer and he had ingested a laxative.

After about almost an hour he started to go the toilet non-stop and he said that he was cancelling his plans to meet his friends.

He started complaining of stomach pains and had to rush off to the bathroom. I couldn’t help but smirk. I knew exactly what had happened. I had spooked him and, even though he didn’t know it was my doing, I was satisfied.

Spiking my boyfriend’s beer with a laxative was not the best way to go about getting him to stop drinking, but it worked. I’m glad I did it, even though it was a risky move. In the end, it was worth it to keep him safe and healthy.
