PM LEE – ABOUT 150,000 NEW HOMES CAN BE BUILT AT THE NEW PAYA LEBAR TOWN

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke during his National Day Rally last night (21 August) and touched on the subject of redeveloping Paya Lebar, with the Paya Lebar Airbase moving out.

He said that the MND estimates that about 150,000 new homes can be built in the new Paya Lebar Town, which is about the size of Punggol plus Sengkang today.

Snippet of PM Lee’s speech

I have told you before that Paya Lebar Airbase would move out, and that we would redevelop Paya Lebar. The relocation will start in the 2030s, but URA is already engaging the public and industry partners to explore redevelopment concepts.

Let me share some of the ideas. This is Paya Lebar Airbase. The runway is a dominant feature. It stretches from one end to the other, 3.8 km long.

It is aligned along the direction of prevailing winds, for aircraft to avoid crosswinds when aircrafts take off and land.

The future town can be oriented this way too, parallel to the runway and then the town naturally breezy. Hopefully, residents will not need to turn on their air conditioning quite as much.

We can repurpose the runway into the town’s central spine, turn it into a green connector or community space extending from one end of town to the other. It will be a distinctive and attractive heritage feature, unique to Paya Lebar.

On both sides of the spine, we will build public and private housing. MND estimates we can build around 150,000 new homes, which is roughly what we have in Punggol plus Sengkang today.

There will be amenities and recreational areas close by, as well as commercial and industrial developments, to bring jobs closer to our homes.

It is not just about using the land physically occupied by the airbase. Once the airbase moves out, we can also lift some of the building height restrictions around it, e.g., in Hougang, Marine Parade or Punggol.

This means we can redevelop these towns, include more amenities, and make much better use of the space there.

It will not happen overnight. But over decades, we can completely reimagine the Eastern part of Singapore.

Singaporeans sometimes worry that we will run out of space in future. That housing will not be available or affordable.

I say: No need to worry. We have done our studies and planning. We will have enough space for future generations.

Our problem is not finding the space to build enough flats, nor keeping home affordable for Singaporeans. We know how to do that.

Our problem is having enough babies to grow up and live in them! And I do not know how to do that but we will come back to that subject in a future rally.

Our island may be small, but it holds great potential. Paya Lebar is just one example of how we are reimagining and transforming Singapore.

We are doing this all across the island – Jurong Lake District, Greater Southern Waterfront, and many other areas too.

Each new estate will be more liveable, greener, and more sustainable than the previous one. This is not easy to do, but just as past generations planned for and created the Singapore that we live in today, we too, must never stop imagining and building the future Singapore for the next generation and beyond.

MASKS TO BECOME OPTIONAL INDOORS, BUT STILL REQUIRED ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT

0

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced during his National Day Rally last night (21 August) that mask wearing will soon be made optional both indoors and outdoors.

However, they will continue to be required on public transport and in healthcare settings such as hospitals, nursing homes and clinics.

Snippet of PM Lee’s announcement

Our Safe Management Measures (SMMs) have protected us well throughout the pandemic. We have adapted them to the changing situation, and gradually eased them as things stabilised.

Today, just two SMMs remain. You must wear masks indoors like you are doing unless you are on stage like me; and you must be vaccinated for higher-risk settings, such as F&B dining-in and large events.

With our situation stabilising, we will reduce the mask requirements further to prevent people from getting tired.

We will only require masks on public transport, where people are in prolonged close contact in a crowded space, and in healthcare settings, like clinics, hospitals, and residential and nursing homes, where there are vulnerable persons.

Everywhere else, outdoors or indoors, masks will be optional.

For schools in particular, we should not need masks in class. I know parents are a little bit worried, but I think there is no need to worry, we have assessed it, we think it is safe.

The children do need to be able to see the facial expressions of their teachers and of each other. You have to learn to read faces. Is he angry? Is he happy? Did he say ‘ter’ or ‘the’? ‘Ker’ or ‘ger’?

Otherwise you grow up with a blank space in your brain. It is crucial for their learning and development.

But please do not take off your masks this very moment. Please wait for the detailed announcement from the MTF.

Beyond these adjustments to SMMs, we must learn the lessons from COVID-19. One day, the next pandemic will come.

A new virus will emerge, more transmissible, more adaptable and more dangerous than COVID-19 and we must be ready for it.

The most important lesson is to maintain the spirit of personal and social responsibility, continue to nurture trust in our society, day in day out, during normal times, so that during the next crisis we can again draw upon a deep reservoir of trust to see us through, just like we have done during COVID-19.

MAN’S FOODPANDA ORDER DELIVERED TO THE RIGHT UNIT BUT WRONG BLOCK, CHARGED $22

Facebook user Chan Kester, shared how he made an order for McDonald’s through the FoodPanda app, but it was delivered to the wrong unit.

Here is what he said

Hi, I do not usually like to comment on incidents publicly but thought it would be good to share.

I ordered a Mcdonalds meal costing $22 on Monday 15th Aug using the Foodpanda app to my home with unit #18-01. Delivery was marked delivered but I did not receive the food.

I called Foodpanda and was attended to their staff called Baba B who said that the food was indeed delivered to my unit #18-01 and the delivery guy had even taken a picture of the delivery.

However, from the pictures, my front door has decorative items and is not like what was in the picture.

I had told Baba B that my condo has 3 towers and 3 different #18-01s and the delivery guy must have gone to the wrong tower, which he refuted.

Foodpanda staff even asked if the decorative items were hung AFTER the complaint was being made. Foodpanda said they will escalate and revert back to me via email within 1-3 working days, however I did not receive any emails from them.

I contacted UOB fraud hotline on the same day (Monday) to block the card and transaction as per SOP in the event of an unauthorised transaction.

However the transaction had still gone through. I contacted UOB and was attended to their staff called Zhiong, who said that they cannot do anything and requested for me to make a police report so that UOB can act on it.

I had done so on the same day as well, however no updates from UOB were received either. According to UOB, I had to call the fraud hotline immediately once the transaction was noted.

Order was made at 1.30pm on that day, transaction went through at about 1.50pm. I explained that if the order took a while, like what it did on that day (Foodpanda app showed 35-45mins ETA), I wouldnt have known that the order would have failed UNTIL the app showed “Delivered”.

It is challenging to appreciate UOB’s viewpoint on this and the expectation for customers to anticipate a failed order even before the app shows “Delivered”

I am disappointed that no actions were done from UOB nor Foodpanda on this. Even a police report, which I found it an unusual course of action just for a failed delivery of $22 but because UOB instructed me to make and hence I did so, was not able to rectify the issue.

TAIWAN SINGER YU TIAN’S DAUGHTER DIES OF CANCER, TELLS FATHER TO “LET HER GO”

0

Veteran Taiwanese singer Yu Tian’s 39-year-old daughter, Yuan-chi, who is also a singer, died from cancer yesterday afternoon, after drifting in and out of consciousness since 18 August.

The 74-year-old veteran singer, most well known for his 1977 hit song Under The Banyan Tree, broke the news to the media outside the hospital, supported by his son Ken.

He said that his daughter appeared alright that morning but her condition suddenly took a turn for the worse, adding that the family wanted to resuscitate her but she had signed a “do not resuscitate” form.

He ceded that “it was better this way”, and that she “wouldn’t be in so much pain anymore.”

Yu Tian said that moments before his daughter died, she didn’t close her eyes, only doing so after he and his wife told her that they have accepted her decision.

He added that he had found a new cancer treatment for her but it was too late.

Begged him to “let her go”

Yu Tian spoke to the media a few days ago, saying that his daughter begged him through her hand gestures to “let her go”.

He said “how could I bear to do so? I told her no and she gestured to me again, asking me to let her go. How can I be so cruel?”

28 Y.O GIRL THINKING OF SELLING HERSELF CAUSE SHE WANTS MONEY

0

Selling myself and I’m not sure if I’m doing the right thing

Ermm, so i am a 28 yr old female (straight) and becos i was molested by male family members when i was 8, i have depression and ptsd, which i have been getting treatment for the past decade.

But ever since puberty, i settle my urges by myself frequently since i still need relief. I have never had a bf, cos i’m not model thin like other woman my age. So recently, I started feeling aroused like hell all the time and initially it made me feel more dirty. But in a spur of a moment, i decided to post an ad online to let guys pet me (no s3x) for a fee. And doing it made me excited.

So I haven’t really done it yet, but my first customer(?) is tmr!! I feel disgusted, fearful and excited at the same time and I don’t know if I should attend the appt.

I’m not gonna lie, I am selling myself.

I am just scared that i will regret it after, and disappoint my therapists. I also come from a strict traditional family and doing this would shred them if they knew it. But the cash is there, my needs are there. But all the psych literature tells me its wrong.

But there are also ppl saying its not wrong cos its my body, my decision.

Anyone out there who can advise? What should I do?

Here are what netizens think:.

  • You were a victim before, dun make yourself more of a victim now. What happened in the past is definitely not your fault, so dun make it yours now by going ahead with this decision.
  • I’ll say don’t do it girl. Coz I read an interview of a hostess before and she said she was kinda cajoled into doing it initially..
  • Are you really prepared for all the things that could go wrong? You are potentially putting yourself in a dangerous situation

STRANGE MAN KEEPS GOING TO HDB RESIDENT’S CORRIDOR TO PANGSAI & PEE

0

So since the start of last month, my neighbors and my family noticed a stench of urine from the drain at our corridor.

Once there was a big plop of poop just lying at the side of the corridor.

Lately, we noticed a strange man wearing a black mask, dark blue hoodie, loitering at our doors. When we open the door, he would run away and dart into the stairwell.

This usually occurs at night, sometimes even close to midnight. It’s scaring us, given that my neighbors have children.

I understand that HDBs are public housing and do not have security guards, so the corridors are counted as public areas.

Even so, releasing faeces and urinating at the corridor is just ludicrous.

Not only does it have a foul stench, it attracts pests and cause great trouble to everyone living on the level. What should we do?

Does anyone have any similar experiences willing to share? I wish to take action fast and not make it a long term problem.

  • Make police report, and apply for permit to install a CCTV to monitor the outside of your house.
  • File a police report and inform TC
  • Go to the cops first. They will provide you with a device that plays a sound when someone is standing outside your door. They will also provide you with a huge “area under 24 hours surveillance” sticker. On your end, install a doorbell camera.
  • I am absolutely baffled, that you as an adult man have not reported this to the police. If you were my spouse or parent I would feel really unsafe and concerned with your ineptitude. Seriously, what have you been dawdling about for?
  • Btw abt contacting police, which u DEFINITELY SHOULD – either do so online (link in one of the top comments), they will call u back – or call the non-emergency hotline 1800 255 0000. In line w the whole reserve 999 for emergencies thing.

WOMAN FORGOT IPAD PASSWORD AFTER REPAIR, BLAMES STAFF & WANTS REFUND

0

Got blamed by a customer because they forgot their iPad password

I work at a specialty retail store and one of the services we offer is device repair, older lady dropped off an iPad mini for a new battery and probably a new screen (the screen had some minor cracking so 50/50 we could get it off without making it worse, so we quoted the price of a new screen as well).

During the check in of the device we ask for the passcode so we can check everything functions; camera, wifi, speakers, and microphone. Customer declined which isn’t that uncommon.

Repair goes well, screen did get damaged so that got replaced. Customer picks it up and takes it home, she comes back about an hour later and starts yelling at me we changed the passcode.

She had disabled the iPad for an hour because of too many failed attempts to login and it was of course my fault.

I explained to her that since she declined to give us her passcode it was impossible for us to have changed it. (Anyone who works in device repair knows if you mess something up with a device it’s usually catastrophic and doesn’t work at all)

She wanted a discount or her money back which sure as hell wasn’t happening, I’m also the assistant store manager, so I told her we aren’t responsible for her getting locked out and the only way she’s getting a refund is if I put the old non-functioning battery back in and the cracked screen back on.

Did a literal huff and stomped out. Haven’t seen her since

NSF WANTS TO “RESIGN” FROM NS, WRITES RESIGNATION LETTER TO MINDEF

0

Hey guys, I am resigning from my position as a NSF next month, can yall help me check through my letter and see if you have any comments?

To whom this may concern,

Please accept this letter as formal notification that I am resigning from my position as a NSF Corporal with the Singapore Armed Forces. This letter shall serve as the required one month advanced notice before my final day here.

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to work in this position for the past 15 months. I’ve greatly enjoyed the opportunities I’ve had to practice patience and tolerance, and I value the guidance of my superiors in ensuring that my workplace is kept neat and tidy. I’ve learned exactly what to avoid in order to foster a good workplace culture, and how to motivate staff. I will be sure to apply these lessons in future places I work in.

Career progression has been amazing. Nowhere else in the country can you boast of having a three-time promotion within the span of 15 months – a testament to the value you place on staff development. Salary wise, this amounts to a whopping 11% increase*, which is extremely competitive relative to the private sector.

The employment benefits are second to none: Not only is food, accommodation and clothing provided for, this organization has actively invested in the wellbeing of its employees by providing FREE fitness and conditioning programs. Not just that, it actively helps us in achieving those fitness standards, by having complementary trainings on the weekends!

I am amazed too, by the second to none healthcare facilities. Never have I seen a company that provides world class medical facilities for its staff to use, free of charge, like the wonderful Pulau Tekong Medical Center.

Indeed, words cannot express how grateful am I to have been a part of this amazing organization. The value of my time here cannot be measured in dollars and cents, and it has been a privilege to be a part of this wonderful place.

Despite this, I have chosen to leave your organization to pursue other goals. It would be unfair to deprive others of a chance to experience this wonderful place for themselves. Nonetheless, I wish it every success in its future endeavors.

*70 dollar increase on a 630 dollar base.

  • I also shag sia, time to tender my resignation to my encik. But I need to add in some bad words so my encik will be more understanding

FAMILY DEPOSITS $50 EACH INTO SECRET ACCOUNT MONTHLY FOR ELDERLY DAD WITH NO SAVINGS

0

My dad spends on all the vices with the exception of smoking.

He also lives day-to-day with no savings at all.

So one day, my siblings together with my mum came up with an idea. We will open a joint account and each put some monies in the account as his old age savings.

Example, each gives him $100 monthly, $50 is given to him to spend, the other $50 goes into his account that he doesn’t know about.

This is for emergencies/rainy days if required. No point telling him to save as people who do not have financial sense will not understand the merits of having savings, especially at his advanced age.

Just save for him without his knowledge.

Netizens’ comments

  • Yup that’s what our family did too. It was requested by my father. Each month, every member who is working will contribute $100. We have been doing this for years so there should be a substantial amount inside.
  • Just top up to his special account. No point put $ in bank

GUY WITH $200K IN SAVINGS, ASKS IF IT IS OKAY TO BE JOBLESS FOR A FEW YEARS

0

For some reasons (undisclosed here) , I may be incomeless for a few years. i have about 200K savings, staying in my parent home but i gave them a lump sum of 50K at one shot. told them is for next few years of me being jobless( not that i want)

Should not have any expenses since i would not go out at all! So maybe phone bill cost $30 per month and insurance which i should have enough saving to tank for five years of payment.

Anyone similar situation to me? So my question is has anyone also incomeless for a few years? So when u get back to salaryman – how did u cope. And what u do when u are incomeless and mental wise all ok? Asking for reference and mental preparation

Netizens’ comments

  • Might want to have a plan? Like what you intend to do during these few years.
Last time I had a friend who did that, left the company and took a break for a few years, then back in, after a few years, she quit again but was feeling restless at home so she got a job which is different from her previous job, which also means she will start at the bottom but get to learn new stuff and she doesn’t mind since she has the financial means to do so.
My mum was let go after her boss sold the company but like my dad said “her backside got nails, cannot sit at home one” , so instead of retiring, she went out to find a new job.
Depending on your industry, you might have to play some catch up after the break to get back on track with the newer technology etc.
  • Here’s sharing my experience: I took an unplanned and unintended career break due to illness, from approx 2016 to 2021. I can’t really put a finger down to the number of years I stopped work, cos I had stepped down my employment gradually from FTE to part-time, to self-employed, then freelance, until my health required me to stop working totally.
When my health got better in late 2020, I started reading up on how to re-enter the workforce/restart my career after a break. Honestly, despite all the hell that the pandemic caused, there were two good things that came out of it that benefitted me:
The SGUnited heavily subsidised training/skills/mid-career programmes that came with monthly training allowance. I personally took a 9-mths long SGUS prog in digital HR to brush up my rusty skills and make myself more relevant to today’s needs, and also got to upskill in the newer tech skill
WFH corporate jobs were previously rare in Sg, but companies were forced to make it happen and now some of them have realised the good in a hybrid workforce. Though it’s still too soon to say for sure, we will have to see how things go after Apr 26.
And remote/hybrid work arrangements were what I really needed so as to manage my energy output better to avoid crashes/relapses. I have since started working in Feb 2022, although in a lower role but getting to restart is of more importance.
In terms of finances I can’t really offer much advice given that I actually had to turn to family for help ultimately cos the medical expenses plus not working expended all of my savings. But the break also forced me to cut my monthly bills to only what is most essential, and I realised that a lot of the expenses that I thought were important or necessary may not actually be. So it’s important to rank your expenses I think, and perhaps as you go along your break, you can slowly cut away those things that you can do without.
Finally, to end this off, I can’t emphasise enough that HEALTH IS WEALTH. Please take care of yourselves first and foremost, be it physically, mentally, emotionally. No matter how much you slog for any company, or offer your time and money to any religion, or bend over backwards to cater to your friends/network/etc, when disaster hits, not all of them will be willing to stay with you to ride it out and give a helping hand. But I also don’t regret or blame the higher being for having to go through what I did, cos the “social cleansing” really helped me to now know who are my important people (honestly many of those whom I thought would be in this group ended up taking flight but it’s okay, good riddance to them).
