A police report had been lodged by a local security firm after fake Whatsapp messages started circulating online about one of their workers dying from being overworked.

The hoax message claimed that a Malaysian worker at Cominco, had died after working for 24 hours “cos of over work (SIC)”.

The hoax message also came with a photo of a man lying down on the floor of what appears to be an office.

According to Lianhe Zaobao, Cominco became aware of the false messages circulating on 22 May, and they clarified that the information was fake.

They explained that the man in the photo was a security guard who fell asleep while on duty after taking medicine because of the drowsiness.

A co-worker of the guard later arrived to take over his shift and found the man lying down on the floor, and he then tried to wake him up but to no avail, before asking for help.

Cominco clarified that the guard is alive and well, and that the false news have since spread on numerous platforms and affected their reputation.

An internal investigation has since been launched by the company and a police report has also been made.

The two lawyers who represented Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam, M. Ravi and Violet Netto, in a last ditch attempt to halt his then-impending execution, were ordered to pay $20,000 in costs to the AGC.

M Ravi was ordered by the Court of Appeal to pay 75% of the costs, while Netto was ordered to pay 25%, after she took over as Nagaenthran’s lawyer.

The AGC had sought $40,000 against Ravi and Netto for trying to delay Nagaenthran’s execution through the filing of unmeritorious applications, resulting in unnecessary costs.

The five-judge Court of Appeal which was led by Sundaresh Menon, the Chief Justice, said on Wednesday that it would be apparent to any reasonable defence counsel that the case brought forward by the two lawyers lacked basis factually.

They rejected Ravi’s argument that he and Netto are no longer practising lawyers, therefore they cannot be made to pay personal costs.

A total of 7 applications to challenge Nagaenthran’s death sentence was filed over the years after he was convicted of trafficking 42.72g of heroin in 2010 and sentenced to death.

Under the law, the court has the power to order personal costs against lawyers who act improperly and negligently and causing the incurrence of unnecessary costs.

The Singapore Police Force said in a news release that 7 men were arrested for rioting along Esplanade Drive.

They were between the age of 24 and 37, and had allegedly fled the scene after the fight upon the police’s arrival.

The Police have arrested seven men, aged between 24 and 37, for their suspected involvement in a case of rioting.

On 22 May 2022 at about 10.45pm, the Police were alerted to a case of a fight along Esplanade Drive. Upon Police arrival, the seven men had fled from the scene. Two other men, aged 25 and 33, sustained minor injuries and were conveyed conscious to the hospital.

Through investigations and with the aid of images from CCTV cameras, officers from Central Police Division established the identities of the seven men involved, and arrested them for rioting on 24 May 2022. Police investigations are ongoing.

If convicted, the offence of rioting under Section 147 of the Penal Code 1871 carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years and caning.

The Police will not tolerate such brazen acts of violence and blatant disregard of the law. We will spare no effort to apprehend such offenders and deal with them in accordance with the law.

According to the Police media release, a 25-year-old man will be charged in court for throwing items down a block in Jurong West.

On 8 May 2022 at 11.06 pm, the Police received a report on items being thrown down from one of the levels of a residential block along Jurong West Street 91.

With the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Jurong Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on the same day.  Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had allegedly thrown a wooden shoe rack, a red basket filled with shoes and two kick scooters down from one of the levels of the residential block.

The man will be charged in court on 27 May 2022 with rash act under Section 336(a) of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to six months, a fine of up to $2,500, or both.

The Police have zero tolerance against acts that endanger the lives or safety of others, and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.
