S’PORE FLYER’S FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUSPENDED AFTER TECHNICAL ISSUE DISCOVERED

The flight operations on the Singapore Flyer has been suspended after a technical issue was detected during a maintenance inspection.

The operator announced on 19 January that the decision to suspend operations on the giant observatory wheel was a precautionary measure.

A spokesperson for the Singapore Flyer said that they are working around the clock to rectify the issue with a specialist professional engineer, but they did not mention when operations will resume.

The spokesperson added: “We seek the understanding and patience of our guests and partners and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Straco Leisure said in a statement:

“We are working closely with the Building and Construction Authority to conduct the necessary inspection, repairs and rectification works. In the meantime, all flights will continue to be suspended.”

However, the Time Capsule attraction, along with the shops and restaurants at the Singapore Flyer’s terminal building are still operating and open for business.

INTOXICATED WOMAN MOLESTED AND RAPED AT CHALET

An incident among a few colleagues who work at night and an intoxicated woman in 2018 turned out to be a serious crime.

The drunk and unconscious woman was taken to D’Resort located at Downtown East in Pasir Ris by 5 others and the 24-year-old was sexually assaulted.

3 of the man involved in the incident has received their sentences, the driver was not convicted.

  • 41-year-old Yap Chun Chieh was jailed for 12 years and received 10 strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to rape and outrage of modesty
  • 29-year-old Tay Boon Huat received 10 years and 3 months jail along with 5 strokes of the cane for sexual assault.
  • 36-year-old Gan Soon Chai was jailed for 15 months and fined $20,800 for filming it.

Last man involved pleaded guilty

32-year-old Yong Chun Hong who worked in Club V5 during the incident has pleaded guilty to court yesterday (Jan 20).

What happened?

When the woman was intoxicated to the level of unconsciousness, Gan asked why Yong had brought the woman along to the chalet.

When they arrived at the Chalet, Yong walked to the neighbouring Cheers convenience shop to get some food, while Yap, Tay, and Gan proceeded inside the chalet.

They tried to wake the woman up but failed to do so, When she remained unconscious, Yong and Tay informed Yap, “The woman is already lying here and you still are not having sex with her. What are you waiting for.”

Tay then proceeded to touch the woman and took her top and bra off.

Yong then approached the victim and touched her.

IRAS WARNS OF SCAM EMAIL TELLING PEOPLE THEY GETTING $20M FROM BILL GATES

The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) issued a warning on 21 January about a scam e-mail circulating, claiming to be from IRAS and telling the recipients to purchase an “approval pass” so that they could receive money from Bill Gates, the 4th richest man in the world.

The scam email would even be allegedly signed off by the Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Ng Wai Choong.

Recipients of the email would be told that their bank accounts have been blocked from receiving $20 million from Bill Gates.

They would then be told to get a letter of confirmation from “the Bill Gate foundation” (yes, the scammers misspelled his name); or alternatively, they could buy an “international approval pass” to receive the money.

Ignore and don’t respond

IRAS (the real, authentic IRAS) has since advised the public to ignore the scam email and not respond to it.

The public is also being advised to not make any payment or follow any instructions sent by the scammers.

Those who have already done so are advised to make a police report.

Not the first emergence

IRAS also previously warned about another form of scam email last November, where documents containing computer viruses were attached.

The emails were impersonating the “Singapore Government Tax Authority” and recipients of the email were told that they have yet to pay their taxes.

Scam emails also emerged last August where recipients were told that they faced a penalty for unpaid taxes and were asked to verify their credit card details to facilitate payment for the penalties.

M’SIA RESUMES SALE OF VTL TICKETS BETWEEN S’PORE & M’SIA, CAPACITY REDUCED

Malaysia’s Minister of Health, Khairy Jamaluddin, announced earlier today that sales of the bus and flight tickets for the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) with Singapore has been resumed, effective today (21 January).

He further added that the quota for the bus and flight VTLs will be reduced by 50 percent of their original capacity.

Jamaluddin added that the decision to resume the sales of VTL tickets was made after assessing the risk and Covid-19 situation in both countries, according to Bernama.

Previously suspended

Sales of the Singapore-Malaysia VTL tickets were previously suspended on 23 December 2021 by Singapore’s MOH, in light of the Omicron variant uncertainties.

Khairy further added that as for any future increases to the ticket sales quota, it largely depends on the risk assessments that they will be subsequently carrying out.

Travelers are reminded to perform their own ART tests on days 2, 4, and 6 after their arrival in Malaysia; along with professional ART tests on days 3 and 5.

The elderly man was last seen at Block 690 Woodlands Drive 75, at about 5.30pm.

According to the netizen, his/her father has health issues and might not know his way home, and he also doesn’t know or have any contact numbers.

5 PERSON CHARGED FOR FRAUDULENT REGISTRATION OF SIM CARDS

5 individuals from the ages of 22 and 40 were charged in court yesterday (Jan 20) for alleged involvement in the illegal registration of prepaid SIM cards.

Among the five-person, a 40-year-old man who runs a handphone shop is also charged for operating a remittance company without a valid remittance licence and offering a cross-border money transfer service.

The Police investigation revealed that the 5 handphone shops misused the personal information of others to register over 460 SIM cards. One of the retailers even used a photocopied passport to complete the registrations.

Registering sim cards typically require the use of a terminal device that scans the identification card/passport.

It is believed that the identifications documents were duplicated when the customers hand over the documents to register for a sim card.

Penalties

The five men and one woman are facing charges for illegally acquiring personal information in violation of Section 416A of the Penal Code, as well as unauthorized alteration of computer materials in violation of Section 5(1) of the Computer Misuse Act.

The crime of illegally acquiring personal information is punished by imprisonment for a term of up to three years, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. Unauthorized alteration of computer materials is punishable by a fine of up to $10,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.

The 40-year-old could be jailed for up to 3 years and a maximum fine of $125,000 for providing payment services without a license. In addition, for providing remittance without a license can result in 2 years jail and up to $100,000 fine.

With the number of scams in recent news, netizens can’t help but be more suspicious of any emails or SMS that appears to be from any company, especially banks.

A netizen received an email earlier today purporting as UOB. However, on closer inspection of the email, the sender appears to be from a Japanese domain name website.

Identifying phishing emails

Emails/SMS can be sent out to trick you to click malicious links which will lead to viruses or trojans infecting your computer. The trojan could be spyware on your computer and even steal your personal information such as bank login details!

Take a closer look at the email

If you refer to the gallery below, it appears to be a legitimate email from UOB and it entices users to a monetary reward for doing a survey.

However, if you click on the name of the sender it actually reflects an email that is not from UOB.

Banks in Singapore to remove links

Recently it has been reported that Banks will begin removing links from their SMS and emails. Therefore any links that are found are probably from hackers.

An anonymous netizen who is working as an intern at an undisclosed SME, shared how the workers are not required to take ART tests and are not practicing social distancing.

The intern alleged that the office has no Covid measures and nobody is required to wear masks as well.

The intern added that they are encouraged not to use their medical leaves as “it says a lot about (their) attitude at work”, and that as a result, his/her colleagues are coming to work despite being sick.

The netizen added that he/she is amazed that the office has yet to become a “spreading zone” as they meet clients daily and that there was a “fellow” whose family member was infected.

Here is the story:

“I would like to whistleblow on my company.

I’m currently interning at an SME and this office has zero forms of covid measures. We are not required to take ART tests and there isn’t any social distancing in the office to top it off nobody is required to wear a mask too!

And my boss had a meeting mentioning how although we are entitled to our medical leaves we are encouraged not to use them as it says a lot about our attitude at work and if we constantly take leave the company doesn’t make money.

So even if my colleagues are sick they will come to work.

I’m amazed that our office has yet to become a spreading zone yet as we meet clients on a daily basis plus there was a fellow whose family member was a covid positive patient and even though they are considered as close contact with cold symptoms they were back in the office after 3 days of mc!

On some days I feel like asking the SDA officers to head up and catch them all but at the same time, they will know it’s me and I might get blacklisted in the industry.”

A netizen uploaded a video of two workers on Facebook urinating in public, the incident was caught by the netizen in the vicinity of Queenstown.

Answering the urgent call of nature is natural but there are toilets everywhere.

Given that the workers might be working there daily or throughout the day, many might believe that the workers do it several times a day.

The netizen also highlighted that there were children nearby and uploaded a photo of children nearby boarding a school bus.

The neitzen who witnessed the incident said:

Whatever, the reasons the workers have for doing so it’s illegal and they should not do it as the penalties might be a large sum for them.

A girl shared how she is being terrorized by her mother who smashes things against the table and throws dangerous items at her, and she wants to seek refuge from her.

Here is the story:

“I am desperate, frustrated, and at my wits’ end. The relationship I have with my mother isn’t the best and I have no one to turn to. I share my problems with a close group of friends but there’s nothing they can do and I’m left to fend for myself at the end of the day.

I’ve done all that I can as a daughter to provide for my mom and even take care of the family by paying for daily expenses. I don’t earn a lot but I try my best to help whenever I can and by making sure that I don’t take a single cent from my parents.

Aside from monetary contributions, I do most of the household chores at home and I even buy my parents’ favourite snacks and food for them occasionally.

My father adores me and does all that he can to ensure that I eat well and sleep well, but my mother terrorises me day and night, to a point where I feel so anxious and annoyed whenever she’s home and I feel at ease when she’s out.

With the neverending pandemic, I’ve been stuck working from home, facing my mother every day and it’s horrible.

She loses her temper over the most minor problems like if I forget to switch off the bathroom lights, or if I don’t respond to her immediately when she calls my name. She can smash things against the table at any time of the day and even throw dangerous items at me whenever she’s angry and never apologise for her actions.

She thinks that she’s the queen of the household because none of us will disobey her. I’d feel better if she does this to everyone but unfortunately, I am the only victim.

She dotes on my brothers, treats them to everything they want to eat, buys gifts for them, cleans up after them, but never does anything for me.

I want to seek refuge elsewhere and live away from her, but I have no boyfriend or husband to rely on, nor do I have the money to rent a place of my own.

I feel so unwanted despite being the child who does everything she can to please her. I’ve seen so many child suicide cases and parents feeling remorseful and heartbroken for not being able to save their child and I often wonder if she’ll feel the same kind of sadness if I’m not around anymore.

Having no one to turn to and no place to go to. Is there really no way out?”
