MAN ALLEGEDLY SELLS FAKE LUXURY GOODS ON CAROUSELL, ARRESTED BY POLICE

0

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has said that a 29 y.o man had been arrested today (13 Dec) for his alleged involvement in selling fake luxury goods on the Carousell platform.

The SPF was already alerted to his activities earlier this year on 27 August when a Police report was made by a victim who was allegedly cheated into buying one of the fake products.

The seller of the product had claimed that the product that was sold is authentic.

Further information was then received by the SPF on 9 December that the same seller was alleged to have used another Carousell account to continue selling the fake goods.

Conducted operation

An operation was then mounted by the Woodlands Police Division on 12 December which led to the arrest of the 29 y.o man.

Fake luxury goods inclusive of bags, shoes and jewellery as well cash of $4,050 were seized during the operations.

Police then conducted their preliminary investigations which revealed the involvement the man had in other similar cheating cases.

Advisory

The SPF advises members of the public to be vigilant in making their purchases online and only make purchases from authorised retailers and reputable sources especially when it comes to goods with a high value.

They added that members of the public should opt for buyer protection by using built in payment options which allows payments to be released only after receiving their goods.

If possible, it is also encouraged not to make direct bank transfers or advance payments to the sellers as there is no guarantee of protection.

Penalties

If convicted of cheating which the man will be charged in court for on Tuesday (14 Dec), the penalties that he could face are up to 10 years in prison and a fine.

SPF SAYS MANY RESOURCES INVOLVED IN RAEESAH’S ALLEGATIONS, REJECT PRITAM’S CLAIMS OF “NO WRONG”

0

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has commented on Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh’s claims that “no wrong” has been done to the Police in the case of Raeesah Khan’s lies in Parliament, rejecting his claims in the process.

They have also said that in actual fact, many resources and manpower were activated into looking into her allegations.

Went through records

The SPF said that after the parliamentary session on 3rd August where ex-opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Raeesah Khan took the stand to claim that a sexual assault victim was mistreated when reporting her case in a Police station, officers had actually went through many records to substantiate her claims, going as far as looking at all visitor records to police stations islandwide since the start of 2017.

They did so to identify if Raeesah Khan had accompanied the victim to the station like what she has claimed.

Furthermore, the police did an extra round of checks so as to ensure that they did not miss out any details.

They added that the case was taken very seriously as it was claimed by a Member of Parliament, and also that the officers in charge took into mind that Raeesah Khan might not have entered the station with the victim, giving her the benefit of doubt.

Based on the assumptions above, the police combed through more than 1,400 records from 2018 to 2021 to narrow down the list to those cases which matches Raeesah Khan’s account and were also told to check through the details thoroughly.

On top of all the work that they have already done, feedback by members of the public on cases like these were also checked through.

Alas, after all the checks, they could not find any case that matches Raeesah Khan’s description.

On Pritam Singh’s claims

Mr Singh attended a hearing by Parliament’s Committee of Privileges (COP) last Friday, giving evidence orally and also spoke about the impact that Raeesah Khan’s statement had on the SPF.

He had then said that Raeesah Khan’s lie would not have affected the SPF, stating that the SPF was not a “broken-back” organisation.

With regards to his claims, the SPF has said that Mr Singh had minimised the possible impact of the lie.

Mr Singh had also questioned the efforts that the SPF had given to investigate the allegations.

The SPF then said that the impact of false allegations like this is not just measured by the amount of man hours lost in investigations, as putting in resources to investigate false allegations like this affects the productivity in handling other real cases, thus impacting members of the public.

On public trust in the SPF

The SPF then stressed the importance of public trust in them, saying that having the public trust them is integral in their officers ability to carry out their missions effectively to ensure the peace and security which the people enjoy now.

This is so that there will be cooperation between the public and SPF when it comes to deterring crime.

False allegations made against the SPF will also make citizens lose trust in the SPF, which may prevent real victims from seeking help.

All allegations against the SPF’s professionalism will be taken seriously, and it is discouraging to the officers when comments that belittle their efforts are made against them.

0

A patient who caught the Omicron variant of the virus in the United Kingdom (UK) has become the first fatality of the variant in the country.

This was confirmed by the Prime Minister of the UK, Boris Johnson as he spoke to reporters.

Mr Johnson added that the initial idea that the Omicron variant of the virus is just a milder version is something that they will have to leave aside for now, and they will have to look at the rate which the virus is spreading through the population in the UK.

Stricter restrictions

Ever since the first cases of Omicron were detected in the UK on 27 Nov, Mr Johnson has set tougher restrictions, urging people in the UK to go for their booster shots so as to prevent causing a strain on UK’s healthcare system.

Spreading rapidly

PM LEE: PANDEMIC SHOWING “ENCOURAGING SIGNS” BUT NOT OVER, $100 CDC VOUCHERS TO BE GIVEN

0

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Monday (13 Dec) that Singapore is beginning to see “encouraging signs” of improvement as compared to the past three months as the pandemic situation eases.

However, Singapore still remains in the woods but he is confident that Singapore can cope with the new Omicron variant with booster jabs as well as the vaccines.

CDC vouchers

PM Lee also announced that the Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers will be given out to all Singaporean households with the value of $100 from Monday.

This vouchers can be used at hawker centres and businesses at the heartlands who are participating in this initiative.

The purpose of these vouchers is to support heartland businesses and hawkers who have been dealt a severe blow by the pandemic and also to thank Singaporeans for “bearing” with the government through these period of difficult times.

These vouchers will cost the government $130 million, and have to be claimed by 31 Dec 2022.

Voucher usage

The vouchers will be made available in digital forms for easier usage.

This will help merchants track the usage easily with lesser hassle and will also help residents have convenience and flexibility of it being digital.

A member of each household can claim the vouchers from go.gov.sg/cdcv with their Singpass. There

The vouchers will also be made available in denominations of $2, $5 and $10.

After claiming the vouchers, a link will be sent to the mobile number of the individual and he or she can then share the link with their household members.

When using the vouchers, residents will just have to click on the link and select the amount that they want to use which will then generate a QR code that can be scanned at the merchant’s side.

There are about 10,000 heartland merchants participating in this initiative.

Assistance to claim the vouchers

Help will be provided for residents who finds it difficult to claim the digital vouchers at community centres, clubs and resident committees at estates with more elderly.

For those who are unable to claim them digitally for whatever the reason may be, there are also physical copies of the vouchers available at community centres and clubs.

Seniors who do not have household members to aid them in claiming the vouchers and those that are not savvy in technology will be given priority when going to the community centres and clubs.

ANGRY SAF REGULAR THROWS HOT SOUP AT HAWKER ASSISTANT FOR GETTING ORDER WRONG

0

Kelvin Tan Chun Long, a 28 year old SAF regular is getting himself into hot soup for throwing hot soup at a hawker assistant after she got his order wrong and could not redo the order.

For his actions, he was charged with one count of causing hurt by a rash act.

Incident details

The incident happened in a coffee shop at Block 676 Woodlands Drive 71 on 6 June 2020, where Kelvin had gone to to take away food.

The hawker assistant aged 53, known as Madam Tan Moi Moi, had prepared Kelvin’s order of fried beancurd skin wrongly due to miscommunication.

Instead of fried beancurd skin, she had prepared fried beancurd and had told Kelvin that she will not be able to redo the order as the food was already cooked.

This made Kelvin unhappy, and he turned away, pushing the plastic bag which held the takeaway container away to the floor.

He then walked to a nearby table which he had earlier placed his other takeaway food and threw a plastic bag containing a container of hot soup in the direction of Madam Tan.

Madam Tan got scalded

The soup in the container spilled out upon hitting Madam Tan, causing her to get scalded and feel a burning sensation on her right waist immediately.

She went to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) later in the day to seek treatment where she was diagnosed to have suffered from a minor burn injury and was given 11 days of Medical Leave.

Subsequently, she also went to Toa Payoh Polyclinic for follow up treatment.

Court findings and accused defense

The DPP for the case did not seek any particular sentence and said that she will leave the sentencing decision to the District Judge even though she noted that Kelvin’s actions were uncalled for and his reaction disproportionate.

In defense, Kelvin’s lawyer argued that his actions were committed in the heat of the moment as the food was meant for his son who has autism and can be quite fussy about food.

The lawyer also stated that Kelvin is feeling remorse over his actions and hopes for a second chance.

As Kelvin is also the only breadwinner for his family and an SAF regular, the lawyer asked the court not to impose a fine of more than $2,000 as any fine higher that that will make him lose his job as a regular.

Kelvin is set to return to court on 28 January 2022 after the lawyer and the prosecution have made their submissions on the compensation.

Possible penalties

Offenders who are prosecuted for rash acts may face a jail term of a year and/or fined $5,000.

I was too shocked and there was no phone and I didn’t know who else could help me, and I ended up waiting about 45 minutes or something.
