In Parliament (July 5), The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has proposed heftier penalties for evading Police roadblocks.
In the proposal, the MHA stated that the jail term will increase from a maximum of 12months to 7 years and the maximum fine amount will be increased from SGD5,000 to SGD10,000.
The jail term has been increased 7 fold and the fine amount doubled.
The new proposed punishment structure for those who evade the roadblock is taken reference from those of voluntarily causing harm to public servants. This is because a car chase typically increases the risk of harming a police officer in duty and also the lives of the public.
What constitutes evading road block?
In the proposal, MHA has further included a few actions that will constitute an “evading roadblock” such as escaping by going through the roadblock without stopping, making a U-turn or even leaving the vehicle.
