8 MONTH PREGNANT WOMAN PUNCHED BY ROBBER IN THE STOMACH AT BEDOK!!!!

A 42-year-old pregnant lady was punched in her stomach by a robber at Bedok as she was taking the lift back home. Last Friday (28 April 2017), the 8 months pregnant lady finished shopping and became the robbers target while she was on the way home.

The robber waited for the victim to walk out of the lift before tugging at her handbag. Instead of letting go, the pregnant lady held on tight and refused to let go of her wallet and started screaming loudly and hoping that the neighbours would hear her cries for help.

When he failed to snatch her handbag, the robber was enraged and punched her in the stomach as a warning.

Despite the attack, she continued to scream loudly and seeing that he was unable to snatch her bag, the robber ran off hurriedly. Fortunate for the lady, both she and the baby were alright after a checkup.

A police report was made at 9 pm that night and after reviewing CCTV footage, the police arrested the robber at Tampines MRT the following day. The robber was charged with attempted robbery in Court on 1 May 2017. If convicted he would be sentenced to a minimum of 1-year jail or up to 7 years with rotan caning.

HUMAN RIGHTS NGO WANTS GOVT TO STOP INTIMIDATING SUNGEI RD MARKET VENDORS

We are deeply concerned about the ongoing police investigation into a “threatening” letter allegedly written by the Chairman of the Association for the Recycling of Second Hand Goods at Sungei Road flea market, Mr Koh Eng Khoon. According to media reports, the letter in question was sent to Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and signed “Koh Eng Khoon (Friend)”. Police visited Mr Koh at his one room flat at around midnight on 28 April. They did not produce a warrant, but officers ransacked the apartment, took photos of Mr Koh, and confiscated his mobile phone as part of the investigation. The visit ended only at approximately one in the morning.

While we understand that all complaints from the public should be investigated, we question whether it was necessary to carry it out in such an intimidating, aggressive, and intrusive manner. This kind of action intensifies a climate of fear that deters frank discussion of public interest issues, and curbs citizens’ participation in matters which the government is not comfortable with.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) announced plans to close Sungei Road Market in 2014. The Association for the Recycling of Second Hand Goods was formed for the purpose of persuading the government to allow the 80-year-old market to continue by letting the vendors operate in an alternative location. However, in February this year, government agencies announced that the market will close on 11 July. Since then, Mr Koh, the vendors and members of the public have escalated their efforts in urging the government to reconsider.

Is the government harassing Mr Koh to intimidate others – especially the Sungei Road street vendors – from campaigning to save their livelihoods and culture? We call upon the state to ensure the immediate return of all confiscated property to Koh and to stop using intimidating investigative tactics on ordinary citizens.

WORRIED NEIGHBOR. KID NEXT DOOR STRESS OF HIS STUDIES

Image for reference

I’m writing this anonymously so i won’t expose anyone’s identity. My neighbor’s kid has been looking really stressed lately but i don’t know how to help without being seen as intrusive. I think he’s stressed because of his studies and his mother’s extreme nagging.

We’re next door neighbors so sometimes i hear her raise her voice. She’ll scold him for being less hardworking than his cousins who are doing well in school. She’ll say he shouldn’t ask them about homework in case she lose face for having a “stupid son”. Once she said she won’t be cooking dinner because she thinks if he can spend an hour eating then might as well study another chapter.

I’ve never heard the boy talk back loudly. I’m worried because he really seems stressed and depressed. I think he’s hardworking but just not up to the mother’s standard. Sometimes i see him with Popular plastic bag filled with assessment books and i’m not sure if he buys them himself because of the stress.

I know I shouldn’t be busybody but he shouldn’t feel this kind of stress at his age! I tried asking him how is he a few times when i see him at the lift but he always give a pained smile and just look away. So how? Is there anything i can do to help without being too intrusive? I really hope he’ll be ok.

Netizen submitted a rant online comparing neighbourhood food and food at Dhoby Gaut.

<Reader Contribution by Chantelle>

“I bought my lunch from a economical beef hoon stall at Dhoby Xchange the other day. I chose mix of fried rice and fried bee hoon, stir-fried cabbage, seaweed chicken, and a fried egg”.

“This combination is my favourite, which costs me around 3.50 at foodcourts in my neighbourhood.”

“However, the unfriendly and rude male staff charged $5.80!!! Is this because I am a foreigner who doesn’t know the price in Singapore? I’ve never paid this kind of price for “economical” bee hoon. Do you think I was conned?”

“In one of these days, I will ask my local friends to get the same combination and see how much the stall will charge him.”

“Do you think it’s overpriced?”
