“After my dad collapsed, he was resuscitated and admitted to the ICU of Toho Medical University Omori Hospital on 19 April 2017. Since then, he has been placed on mechanical support and has remained unconscious throughout.
We were told that his heart was beating irregularly and stopped for an extended period of time, causing his brain to suffer permanent damage. According to the Japanese doctors, it is impossible to determine how long my dad will remain comatose. It could be a week, a year, or forever.
His medical bills are rising exponentially. The first night alone costs S$40,000, and every subsequent night in the ICU costs approximately S$10,000. We are now 1 week into his hospitalization and owe the hospital approximately S$120,000 (and counting).
Unlike most people, my dad does not have any life insurance. His travel insurers, MSIG, have informed us that we are unlikely to have a successful claim as his collapse was attributable to a pre-existing heart condition. As such, they were also not able to provide a letter of guarantee for payment to the hospital. In the absence of such letter, we have been notified to make upfront payment in cash for the entire hospital bill. Specifically, 10% of the bill on the day we leave the hospital, and the remaining 90% within the following week.
To put it plainly, we have ZERO financial help from our insurers – not for his hospitalisation, nor any medical evacuation plans that we hope to execute.
While my father’s life hangs on the line on foreign soil, we have no idea if and when we will be able to bring him home. His medical team’s current opinion is that he is unlikely to ever recover from this, and even in the unlikely event that he does, his QOL will be severely diminished. In short, he could be alive and yet not living.
Our hope is to bring him back to Singapore, where we can receive subsidized healthcare and financial aid, not to mention emotional support from our loved ones. However, our only viable option is to arrange for a medical evacuation, which will cost us another approximately SGD$120,000 (based on quotations obtained) that we are unprepared for but have to shoulder.”
It is showed in the video the motorcyclist couldn’t stop in time and end up crashing into Toyota! It not clear who fault is it but hopefully, the motorcyclist is alright.
I am unable to describe with words how disappointed I feel at this moment. Disappointed at the very government I have voted for, because I believed that they would protect me and do what is right.
Instead of punishing a criminal (human trafficker) who allowed a stranger into my home without my consent, a criminal who circulated naked photos of my 19 month old baby boy to strangers I don’t know and a criminal who violated the PDPA act by taking photos of my personal documents and sending it to her loser Singaporean lover, MOM (Ministry Of Manpower) have decided to give my ex-maid freedom to roam and live in Singapore + an option to work for other employers while they “investigate” her.
How many employers have to suffer because MOM chooses to protect these errant maids, simply because they assume that these maids are weaker. We pay hefty fees ranging from $1500 – $5000 SGD each time we apply for a maid and whenever these maids decide that they want to choose an expat employer or change to a different family, we just have to forgo our money and pay another fee to apply for another maid.
If we are lucky, maybe we would have found a suitable helper after 2 or 3 rounds of changing and forking out about 10k – 15k in fees and loans. If unlucky, we may end up paying those fees and still having a terrible maid who either threatens us (employers) or is lazy and just because we are tired of searching/paying, we bite the bullet and just hang on to the lousy helper with the bad attitude.
Sure, there are terrible employers. But you best believe that there are equally horrible maids. Maids who have sex with our display items, maids who steal, maids who traffick humans and maids who abuse our babies.
Shouldn’t MOM be fair and protect both parties? Instead of just giving these errant maids the power to bully us, the employers who are actually nice! We treat them well because we assume that they would appreciate and reciprocate with the same treatment. However, there are a million examples where we, the nice employers get the worst of these maids and we suffer at the hands of these errant maids because they are fearless with the protection of MOM.
I am speechless. I am speechless that my government is allowing my ex-maid, the human trafficker to live and work freely in Singapore. I am sure her, along with many many many other errant maids are well aware that we, employers are helpless against them because MOM is on their side.
I now understand why my ex-maid said what she said after I called the police on her.
“MOM will protect me, I am not afraid. The police can’t do anything to me.”
So my fellow employers in singapore, be very afraid when hiring maids (especially Filipinos), be weary, be cautious, be alert. Watch out for yourself because you better know that MOM will not have your back.
It is sad that we, Singaporean working citizens are at the mercy of these errant maids and even our government is unable to help us. We just have to keep paying hefty fees to change maids or bite the bullet and accept one that will give us grief.
Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say has said that we will experience a rise in unemployment rate. In his May Day message, he said some sectors are still struggling with structural changes and would need more time to get through this stressful period.
Although the unemployment rate for Singaporean workers rose to 3% last year, Mr Lim told people not to worry as he is sure the economy is still growing.
He said while there is no shortcut to success, he is convinced that we will emerge stronger from this as long as employers and workers are faster in coping with challenges and adjusting to new environments.
10 years ago, I was an Indian from India with no money or anything to my name. I met Singaporean wife while I was studying here. After that when I went back to India to work we still kept in contact and had a long distance relationship for 3 years.
It was a journey that was tough but I glad I didn’t give up cos from the last 8 years I had 2 children and eventually become a Singapore Citizen.
The painful part was that my mother in law realize that I was serious with her she actually gives money in India to some people gets me killed.
I thank God that we I survived the ordeal and we could be together as I know she is a God’s gift for me. Even though she better than me in every aspect I know I would love her the way no one else would love there and I don’t want to live a life without her.
As for my mother-in-law, I have already forgiven her and hopefully one day she would accept me as her lawfully son-in-law.
A video of a drunk man harassing a taxi driver posted yesterday by netizen Yan Ting has caused a new surge of anger among Singaporean netizens, with many calling for the man’s identity to be exposed for bullying the elderly Chinese taxi driver.
The video posted yesterday showed the man using a large stash of cash to taunt the taxi driver, who could be heard trying to defuse the situation and asking the man to let him go.
According to screenshots of a conversation between the taxi driver and his own group of friends on WhatsApp, the passenger had quarrelled with his girlfriends in the taxi and was venting his frustrations on the older man.
After news of this story broke, a friend of the man’s ex-girlfriend sent a message to expose his identity.
She claims that the man, Gary Lim, is the boss of a famous chicken rice stall in Singapore. She added that the man had “abused” her friend in a previous relationship.
