Trump Imposes 100% Tariff on Semiconductors, Targets Taiwan’s Role

0

The United States has announced sweeping new tariffs on all semiconductor chips imported into the country, setting a rate as high as 100%. This bold move forms part of former President Donald Trump’s “America First” economic strategy and directly calls out Taiwan’s significant involvement in the global semiconductor supply chain.

Trump unveiled the tariffs on 31 July, stating the duties would apply to “all chips and semiconductors entering the US,” unless companies commit to manufacturing within American soil. This incentive aims to encourage semiconductor firms to relocate production back to the US.

Taiwan in the Crosshairs

Trump specifically criticised Taiwan during his remarks, saying, “Everyone drained Intel before moving elsewhere, especially Taiwan.” This pointed statement highlights US concerns over the shifting of chip manufacturing overseas, which has impacted domestic companies like Intel.

Moreover, Trump warned companies failing to fulfil their promises to build factories in the US that tariffs would be retroactively enforced. This approach underscores Washington’s determination to bring critical tech manufacturing back home.

Impact on the Global Semiconductor Industry

Industry watchers expect the 100% tariff to send significant ripples through the global semiconductor ecosystem, heavily reliant on Asian producers, including Taiwan’s giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

While Trump mentioned that TSMC’s US investment was downgraded from a previously claimed US$300 billion to US$200 billion, this figure remains above TSMC’s own official estimate of US$165 billion. Despite these discrepancies, Trump remains confident that chip manufacturers will ultimately commit to US-based production.

Wider Economic and Trade Repercussions

This tariff announcement follows a series of trade disputes and signals intensified US efforts to secure semiconductor supply chains domestically, a critical move amid growing geopolitical tensions.

Taiwan, as a leading semiconductor hub, faces potential challenges if these tariffs disrupt trade flows or increase production costs. Industry experts warn this could reshape regional supply dynamics and affect global technology markets.

Bukit Batok Unit “Redecorated” By Female Loan Shark Harasser

0

A 37-year-old woman was arrested by the Singapore Police Force for her suspected involvement in loanshark harassment offences following an incident at a residential unit in Bukit Batok East Avenue 3.

The police were alerted on 5 August 2025 at around 10.34 pm after the main gate and door of a unit were vandalised with red paint. A debtor’s note was also found left outside the premises, prompting investigations into the matter.

Officers from the Jurong Police Division, with the assistance of images from police cameras, quickly identified the suspect and arrested her the following day on 6 August. The red paint and debtor’s note were seized as evidence. Authorities believe the woman may also be linked to similar loanshark harassment cases across Singapore.

Serious Charges and Possible Penalties

The suspect will face charges in court on 7 August 2025 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, loanshark harassment offences carry stiff penalties, including fines ranging from SGD 5,000 to SGD 50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.

The Singapore Police have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on loanshark-related harassment. Individuals found deliberately damaging property or disrupting public peace will be dealt with severely under the law.

The police urge the public to avoid involvement with loansharks and not to assist or cooperate with them in any way. Anyone suspecting loanshark activities or harassment is encouraged to report immediately by calling 999.

Public Advisory Against Loanshark Activities

Loansharking remains a serious social issue that undermines community safety and security. The police emphasise that victims and bystanders should seek help early and avoid engaging with such illegal moneylenders.

Through vigilant community cooperation and swift law enforcement actions, authorities aim to curb loanshark intimidation and protect residents from related offences.

The public is reminded to stay alert and support efforts to uphold safety and peace in their neighbourhoods.

Sole Proprietor Sentenced to Nearly Three Years’ Jail for Cheating and Money Laundering

0

A 58-year-old sole proprietor, Koh Kok Liang, has been sentenced to 35 months’ imprisonment after being found guilty of cheating and money laundering offences related to a scheme targeting Hakuto Singapore Pte Ltd. The sentencing was handed down on 7 August 2025.

Koh was convicted on two counts under Section 420 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code for conspiring to cheat Hakuto, and one count under Section 44(1)(a) of the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act (CDSA) for assisting in retaining benefits from criminal conduct. Additional charges related to money laundering and conspiracy were also considered during sentencing.

The case centred on a fraudulent scheme uncovered in 2018, where a senior sales manager at Hakuto, Albert Kee Boon Ping, allegedly collaborated with Koh, who is the sole proprietor of Advantronics Datanet Solution Trading (ADST), a supplier to Hakuto.

Details of the Fraudulent Scheme

Investigations by the Commercial Affairs Department revealed that Albert issued fake purchase orders for semiconductor programming and baking services to Koh, despite such services neither being requested nor within ADST’s capability. These orders were created using Hakuto’s letterhead, bypassing the company’s approval processes.

Koh would then submit corresponding invoices from ADST, requesting payment for services that were never performed. The finance department at Hakuto, relying on these documents, issued payment cheques to ADST, which Koh subsequently deposited into ADST’s bank accounts.

Between 2016 and 2017, Hakuto was defrauded of approximately USD 362,323.40 (around SGD 503,109.05). Following cheque clearance, Koh withdrew the funds and shared the proceeds with Albert. In 2017 alone, Koh passed cash cheques totalling SGD 190,594.27 to Albert, enabling the latter to unlawfully retain financial gains from the fraud.

Legal Implications and Sentencing

Under Singapore law, offences involving cheating by conspiracy can result in fines and imprisonment up to 10 years. Money laundering offences carry penalties of fines up to SGD 500,000, imprisonment for up to 10 years, or both.

This case demonstrates the authorities’ continued vigilance in investigating corporate fraud and money laundering. The sentence reflects the severity of crimes that undermine corporate integrity and trust in Singapore’s business environment.

The Singapore Police Force continues to encourage organisations to maintain robust internal controls to prevent such fraudulent activities.

Tomorrowland Music Festival Confirmed for Pattaya’s Wisdom Valley in 2026

0

The internationally acclaimed electronic dance music (EDM) festival Tomorrowland is set to debut in Asia, with Pattaya’s Wisdom Valley officially confirmed as the venue for the 2026 event. Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong announced the confirmation, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting this major entertainment event.

The festival is expected to generate an estimated 21 billion baht (approximately S$850 million) in revenue over a five-year contract, marking a significant boost to the local tourism economy. Tomorrowland’s arrival in Chon Buri province, where Pattaya is located, has excited EDM fans across the region, who have awaited official details since rumours emerged last year.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Governor, Thapanee Thamrongthanyawong, emphasised that while the private sector will primarily fund the festival, the government will provide necessary support to ensure Thailand’s competitive hosting of the event. She confirmed that the festival will run from 2026 to 2030, expecting to attract around one million visitors in total.

Public Concerns Over Budget and Social Issues Surrounding the Festival

Despite the positive economic outlook, the government’s planned investment of 1.6 billion baht (about S$65 million) for the event has sparked debate. Critics argue that this budget could be better allocated to supporting families of soldiers and civilians affected by recent border conflicts.

Minister Sorawong responded by assuring that the Tomorrowland funding comes from a separate budget and that the government will continue to provide appropriate assistance to those impacted by security issues. This distinction aims to alleviate public concerns and maintain focus on both social welfare and tourism development.

Fans and the tourism sector remain eager for further information on ticket sales and the festival schedule. The government and event organisers have committed to delivering a world-class experience while balancing national priorities.

Tomorrowland’s Arrival to Boost Thailand’s Tourism and Entertainment Profile

Tomorrowland’s decision to hold its first Asian edition in Pattaya underscores Thailand’s growing reputation as a vibrant hub for international events. The festival is expected to catalyse significant growth in hospitality, transportation, and entertainment sectors in the region.

This high-profile event also presents opportunities for local businesses and artists, fostering cultural exchange and creating jobs. With careful planning and investment, Tomorrowland could become a landmark attraction in Thailand’s annual event calendar.

As anticipation builds, authorities continue to work closely with stakeholders to ensure a safe and memorable festival for both visitors and residents alike.

GIRL SAYS BF STOPPED SENDING HER HOME EVERYDAY AFTER THEY GOT TOGETHER

0

I recently dated a Singaporean guy and eventually he become my bf. He did pay for the first date and all.

But subsequently in the relationship, he did hint to split 50 50 and want me to take parts of my share. He send me home everytime initially , but after we get together,  no more.

He say in Singapore, 80% of the relationship goes on dutch and 15% is guys pay all and 5% others.  It is true? I wasnt from Singapore and he was the first Singaporean bf I have.

From my understanding, guy do pay for dates. But when in relationship, is it normally dutch?  One meal alternatively? He wants equal contribution to our relationship. We had a fight over this and he gave in.

When we talk about family,  he say he expect his wife to continue work after pregnancy because he think women will become shallow and obsolete if they don’t.  Is this a common beliefs among the Singaporean?  I don’t intend to be a housewife but taking out the option is another thing.

I know each relationship is unique and we are all dealing with different things.  The objective is this post is just to understand the social norms Singaporean guys have. I am just confused that is my bf the norm or not.

My bf still treated me very well and love me a lot. He did pay for most of the date and I pay for some dates. He pay for the food,  I pay for the drinks.

Netizens’ comments

  • I think equality is very important! He should have a baby for each baby you pop out too, if not then very unfair sia.
  • Well… As ladies we believe that we are capable of paying our own meals. However, we would want to date a guy who will pay for dates. We offer to pay and go on dutch is one thing. However, having gentleman traits is another. Especially is BF status.
And if the guy is stingy looking at everything 50-50 then is ok. Is a sign of not a long term partner.
So imagine married and we have to split 50-50 for all utilities, grocery, kids expenses and so on. Then we get ourselves a roommate and not husband. As will they split pregnancy with a 50-50? House chores with 50-50? Child mining with 50-50? Are we going to charge base on surrogate mother? Nanny? Maid? And split that 50-50 from there?
    This is totally nonsense.
I agree that a family should shoulder expenses together but as a guy he should carry more portion of it too. As a lady we should also assist to carry some of the burden by paying some and taking responsibility of the household.
Otherwise there is no need to married if marriage is about 50-50. We could live better being single.

WIFE CAN’T STAND HUSBAND AFTER 1 YEAR OF MARRIAGE, WANT TO RUN ALREADY

0

I have been married a year and I feel a strong urge to run.

Hello. Has anyone ever been through this situation? I feel a strong urge to run from my marriage. I just can’t stand him anymore.

We are polar opposites. We knew it but we didn’t know how much it would affect us. I feel so miserable and so unhappy.

He is spoiled and hates helping out at home. Whenever he needs to do something he complains about it and throw temper tantrums like a kid.

He just want to sit around drink coffee and play games all day.

One shred of responsibility is welcomed with complains. He wants kids but I honestly don’t feel safe having children with him, because I feel like as an adult he does such a poor job handling the very little he is responsible for.

As a parent I will probably take on 200% of the load. I am so turned off and discouraged, I just want to run.

We had several conversations about his behavior. He acted like he wants to change, but that always last just 2 days. He will never grow up. I love him, but I can’t see myself living like this forever.

Is there a way to turn this around? I am honestly so close to throw the towel.

Four Suspects in Johor Robbery Kill Police Officer by Ramming Car, Three Flee

0

In a shocking incident in Alor Setar, Kedah, four criminals fleeing from a series of break-ins in Johor collided with and fatally injured a police officer during a botched getaway.

The incident occurred at about 3:30pm on 7 August at a location known as Bukit Gajah. According to Kedah Police Chief Azri, officers responded promptly to a report of a break-in, dispatching two vehicles with a total of five police personnel.

Upon arrival, the officers spotted one suspect moving a safe inside a house. The suspect was seated in a blue Lexus, joined by three others inside the vehicle. As one officer alighted to investigate, the driver accelerated and rammed the officer, killing him instantly. The car forced its way between two police vehicles, damaging three cars in the process.

While one suspect was apprehended on the scene, the other three sped away northwards for about seven kilometres to Raia Hotel in Kampung Pati, where their vehicle broke down. The fleeing suspects then carjacked a civilian’s vehicle—a couple were inside at the time, with the male driver forced out—before abandoning that car after a crash near a government clinic in the area. The trio was later arrested.

The four suspects, aged between 24 and 26, have extensive criminal records, with the 26-year-old identified as the ringleader holding 77 prior offences. Charges include burglary, vehicle theft, and drug-related crimes.

The police have launched investigations under burglary and murder statutes and will seek to extend detention orders for the suspects. Coordination with Johor police is ongoing to uncover any accomplices.

The deceased officer, Sergeant Mohammad Hafiz, 35, had served in the force for 15 years and leaves behind three young children aged 4, 9, and 11. The police chief expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

PUB Investigates Wastewater Overflow in Bedok Reservoir; Blockage Linked to BTO Construction Site

0

National water agency PUB is currently probing a wastewater overflow incident near Bedok Reservoir, which has been traced back to a nearby Build-To-Order (BTO) construction project at Chai Chee Green. The spill, reported on 6 August, caused noticeable water pooling and a strong stench affecting residents near Blocks 619 and 623 Bedok Reservoir Road.

Residents and MP Pritam Singh of Aljunied GRC raised concerns after spotting the overflow and foul smell. According to Mr Singh, the issue is likely due to a blockage in an underground sewage pipe running from the Chai Chee Green BTO site across the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) to the Eunos division. This blockage led to backflow and discharge at a low-lying inspection chamber near Block 619.

PUB confirmed on 7 August that the source of the overflow was a choked sewer pipe on the BTO construction site. Sand and cement had obstructed a section of the sewer, particularly near two manholes within the worksite. This blockage impacted not only residents around Blocks 619 and 623 but also an industrial building at 502 Chai Chee Lane.

To mitigate the problem, PUB deployed five tanker trucks to pump out the wastewater and has implemented measures to manage the flow during peak hours. Ongoing efforts include clearing the obstruction to prevent further overflow.

During a site visit, Mr Singh acknowledged PUB’s collaboration with the main contractor, LS Construction Pte Ltd, and the Housing & Development Board (HDB) to divert wastewater to unaffected manholes. Construction workers have also been assisting with traffic management in the Eunos area.

PUB has pledged a full investigation into how the blockage occurred and will take enforcement action if necessary to prevent future incidents.

Residents affected by the wastewater overflow can expect continued updates as PUB works to restore normal conditions in the Bedok Reservoir vicinity.

Redhill Mixed Rice Stall Accused of Triple-Charging Elderly Man’s CDC Vouchers — Police Investigating

0

An elderly man’s lunch at a Redhill mixed rice stall has turned into a police case after his child alleged he was overcharged by S$10 through multiple CDC voucher deductions, in addition to cash payment.

The claim first surfaced on Reddit on 5 August, when the man’s child posted a warning urging the public to “beware of CDC voucher scammers”. The post sparked a wave of angry reactions from netizens, many expressing concern for vulnerable seniors who may not be tech-savvy.

According to the Redditor, the incident occurred on 2 August. The elderly man had purchased a S$6.50 meal and attempted to pay S$5 of the total with a printed CDC voucher — a format he used because he was unfamiliar with smartphone transactions. The cashier allegedly scanned the voucher but claimed it was invalid. After a similar response to a second voucher, the cashier asked for a third. At that point, the man became suspicious but opted to pay the full bill in cash before leaving.

Later, his child checked his CDC voucher transaction history and discovered two successful S$5 deductions at the same stall — meaning the man had unknowingly paid S$16.50 for his lunch. Believing it to be a scam, the family filed a police report.

Stall Responds, Denies Intentional Wrongdoing

Authorities Monitoring CDC Voucher Misuse

The Singapore Police Force confirmed that a report had been lodged and investigations are ongoing. The incident has reignited conversations about the potential exploitation of CDC vouchers, particularly among seniors unfamiliar with digital payment systems.

With the government continuing to promote CDC voucher usage to help households manage daily expenses and support local businesses, consumer protection remains critical. Experts advise residents to keep track of their voucher transaction histories and report discrepancies promptly to both merchants and the authorities.

If proven, this case could prompt tighter guidelines and stricter merchant training to ensure the scheme benefits its intended recipients without abuse.
