CEO TELLS EMPLOYEE – I DON’T CARE IF YOUR CHILD IS IN HOSPITAL, YOU BETTER ANSWER PHONE

CEO said “if your child is in the hospital, you still better answer your phone”

I am 2 months into working for this startup company, and I knew they didn’t value work/life balance from talking to their employees.

However, I didn’t understand the gravity of it. The executives work through the nights, call at all times of day, and expect the same from their employees.

My supervisor, when I said “I care about work/life balance” he said “you’re too young for that, you are young to work hard”.

The CEO at a Christmas party last year said “if your child is in the hospital, you still better answer your phone”, AT THE CHRISTMAS PARTY.

I wonder how long I’ll last before burning out, the salary is very good. I’m going to try and stick it out and save up, then take my money and RUN.

  1. Since you just started you can establish early boundaries. Do NOT pick up all hours of the day. And then just show up on Monday, oh hey, saw you called, what can I help with? Now, that may or may not fly so you have to decide are you willing to do that and possibly lose the job. Or do you just want to do the 24 hr game until you are ready to leave. I mean that’s really your decision on how to approach it. But, in my experience, setting up the boundaries early on is a lot easier than being misused and later trying to say no.
  2. I rent him my time and services for an extendet period of time. In this time He can call me ask me question whatever. The remaining time is solely my Venture where I am boss and He is the minion.
  3. These people have the soul of a walking corpse. You have the right idea OP. Take your money and run if they cross you.
  4. I’m at the end of my full time work life. The worst job I ever had was working for a tech start-up. I was married, with kids. I was one of the few with a family. I believe that the stress working for those types of companies takes years off of your life.
