Just earlier this week, management dropped the bombshell: retrenchment exercise for multiple departments, and for those who managed to survive? Zero increment. Freeze bonus. Zip. Nada.
By afternoon, the entire mood in the office completely flipped from depressing to straight-up looting. People really don’t give a damn anymore. Everyone started taking “compensation” in whatever physical form they could find.
Go pantry see liao standard warzone. All the Nescafe instant coffee packets, TWG tea bags, and Milo tins completely wiped out within two hours. People brought back giant NTUC plastic bags and were literally dumping whole containers of Julie’s peanut butter biscuits into their bag. One guy from finance even uncrewed the whole Nespresso capsule dispenser and brought it home, don’t ask me how.
It didn’t stop at the pantry. People started going into the supply closet and taking entire unopened boxes of A4 paper, box files, highlighters, double-sided tape, and even Pilot pens by the boxful. Someone even went to the toilet to harvest roll after roll of industrial toilet paper and tissue boxes. I saw one senior executive walking out with a box of heavy-duty garbage bags and 3 rolls of bubble wrap like he preparing for doomsday.

Just 3 months ago during the town hall, our big boss was happily beaming on Zoom telling everyone that the company performance was 20% ABOVE target for the year. Everyone was expecting a decent bonus and at least a slight increment to match inflation. Then suddenly last week, our lan jiao shareholders from UK headquarters stepped in and said profit margin “not enough” and they wanted more returns. So to make the balance sheet look pretty for the shareholders, they decide to slash local headcount and freeze everything.
Loyalty to company is absolute BS. They treat you like a line item on an Excel sheet, don’t expect staff to treat them with respect. Company take away our livelihood, staff take away their A4 paper and toilet roll. Money is real,Everything else is fake.
