Nineteen smokers were caught with duty-unpaid cigarettes during operations conducted in Geylang on 29 and 31 January 2019. They were issued with composition sums ranging from $500 to $800, depending on whether the person was a repeat offender and the quantity of duty-unpaid cigarettes in his/her possession.

The operations are part of Singapore Customs’ regular, island-wide efforts to suppress the demand for duty-unpaid cigarettes. Such operations complement our enforcement actions against peddlers and suppliers of duty-unpaid cigarettes. During a series of operations conducted in January 2019, Singapore Customs also arrested 10 peddlers in Geylang.
