DAUGHTER ASKED MUM TO BE QUIET AS SHE’S HAVING ZOOM MEETING, MUM SAYS “THIS IS MY HOUSE!”

Is it reasonable to ask your family members to make less noise when you are having a zoom work meeting at home?

My mom got extremely offended by the request and said that it was her home, why should she be keeping quiet.

For context, my parents fight a lot so it is not normal day-to-day noise, but more like shouting and yelling.

Wondering whether it is reasonable to ask them to not make so much noise or am I being unreasonable since they’re in their own home.

Netizens’ comments

  • Reasonable, but at the same time, if that’s what she insists, then find someway around it. Find another place to have the meeting, outside of home.
I realise sometimes that as much as I want my own personal space, my home and family don’t give me that option, so I just find my space outdoors.
  • Reasonable. I asked my dad to do the same. He said ok good. Then proceed to watch tiktok at full volume.
  • It’s totally reasonable. It’s not just you, I’m pretty sure even your neighbours would get annoyed if your household is full of shouting and yelling everyday. With that said, currently Singapore is no longer have covid lockdown measures in place, so if you have the means to find somewhere else to work, it’ll be better solution for it.
  • It isn’t just her space. Everyone shares it and should be considerate of each other. Don’t let your crappy mum make you think you’re asking for too much.
