My daughter has been through a lot. Back when she was 15 years old she was targeted, maltreated, & neglected for financial gain by her mother who was using the “child support system” (alimony). As a joint custodial parent the system simply discriminated against me to get $, they took everything they could for the last 5 yrs without remorse & without verifying the children benefitted.
I say this because it’s context to understand how she’s been required to work to cover her needs & the court documents allow her to justify some status where she could not make enough.
She eventually graduated & made the decision to go to a private school to further her studies.
We spoke about the financial commitment of 50k per year tuition & how it was her full responsibility. We had numerous arguments & financial convos strained our relationship. I let her do her thing without much oversight/assistance.
I never filled out/signed anything more than what was legally required nor did I talk with any financial people at her school. She had a scholarship for the first 2 years & changed majors after the first yr. I gave $2500 to her for a school bill that was due & blocking registration in 2021.
In March 2022 the school placed an 8k past due bill into collections and a letter was sent to my home. my daughter said she swore she was still enrolled. The lies continued for months – “I’m going to the school library”, “studying for finals”, etc.
But it all turned out to be a lie after I called up the school and said that “this student does not exist”.
After the last fight/argument, my daughter stayed out with friends. The next morning, her friend drove my car, and crashed it, & now it’s in the shop getting repaired & on my insurance policy.
What should I do with this kind of daughter?
