On 25 January 2021, Thai lawmakers opted in a vote to allow abortion of up to 12 weeks of pregnancy while later abortion penalties continue. During the session of the vote, they came to a conclusion of 166 to 7 votes being in favor of the change in the law.
After the change in law, abortion after the first 12 weeks would be allowed under certain conditions else, there will be a fine of up to 10,000 baht or a six-month jail term or both. The condition would be that under the doctor’s term that there is a high risk for the life of the mother or impairment of the child after birth, or due to rape where the pregnancy is formed.
This new law caused some unhappiness among people in Thailand as they said that abortion or keeping the baby is the mother’s choice and not the country’s rights.
