ELDERLY WOMAN FELL OFF BIKE ON THE ROAD @ CLEMENTI, COMMANDO ENCIK CARRY HER TO SAFETY

An elderly woman had fallen off her bicycle and onto the road, lying down on the ground with her groceries spilled out of her bicycle basket.

She was spotted by a warrant officer (Encik) from the Singapore Armed Forces, who hurriedly got out of his car and carried the stricken old woman to safety and away from the other cars.

He then stayed with her and only left after making sure that the elderly woman was well enough to go back home safely, and received commendations for his act of gallantry.

What happened?

On 17 May at about 12.30pm in the afternoon, Master Warrant Officer (MWO) William Nadan was on his way to have lunch when he saw the elderly woman lying on the traffic walkway with her bicycle fallen on the ground.

An elderly man was also seen struggling to pull his companion away from the road.

MWO William then rushed out of his car and helped to carry the elderly woman off the road and onto the pavement for her safety.

He also remained with the woman until she was well enough to return home.

At around 12.30 PM on 17 May 2023, Master Warrant Officer (MWO) William Nadan, Officer Commanding of the Island Defence Training Wing, Island Defence Training Institute, was en route for his lunch break when he found a senior lying on the traffic walkway with her fallen bicycle full of groceries. Next to her, an elderly gentleman was struggling to pull her away from the road.

The Commando instinctively sprung into action and took charge of the situation. MWO William exited the car in no time and helped to carry her onto the pavement to prevent further harm.

MWO William only left the scene, after she was well enough to head back home with her companion.

We applaud MWO William’s efforts and thank him for being a responsible citizen.

MWO William said, “At that moment, I instinctively opened the door and rushed out to help her.”

Having undergone the Emergency Medical Specialist course, MWO William quickly moved the elderly to safety and checked if she require any medical attention.

MWO William shared, “No matter how difficult or unfavourable a situation is, you must always step up and help others.”

Despite being a strict and firm trainer, he also shows compassion and empathy to everyone, uniformed or not.

Exemplifying the SAF core values, MWO William is a prime example of how we should always step forward to help anyone in need.
