As someone who has recently been out of school and on the job hunt, I’ve quickly found out that many job ads often advertise jobs as entry-level positions that don’t require any prior experience.
However, it is always not what it is
What I’ve found, however, is that when I go to the interview, the employers want at least 3 to 5 years of experience. This contradicts much of what was advertised and can be incredibly frustrating and disheartening, especially when you’re just starting out in the job market.
At first, I thought maybe I was just unlucky and I was running into a wall of employers who were expecting more from me than what was advertised.
But after talking to more people who had had similar experiences, I realized this was common everywhere. It seems like more and more employers are advertising entry-level positions, but then expecting more experience from job applicants than what was advertised.
I understand that employers are looking for the best of the best, but it seems unfair to advertise a job as entry-level when they are expecting so much more from job applicants.
It’s almost as if employers are setting people up for failure in their interviews by not being direct and open that they want people with experience instead of the usual ‘fresh grads are welcomed to apply’.
It really wastes a lot of time for potential job seekers like me who just came out of school.
I’ve also found that many employers are not only expecting more experience than what was advertised, but they are also expecting job applicants to have a certain level of knowledge. It seems like employers want job applicants to already have experience in the field they are applying for, which isn’t always realistic.
Overall, it seems like employers need to be more honest and upfront about what they are looking for in job applicants. It’s unfair to advertise a job as entry-level when they are expecting much more than that.
It’s also important for employers to recognize that not everyone has the same level of experience. Some people may have more than 3 to 5 years of experience, while others may have less.
Employers should be open to considering all applicants regardless of their experience level just like what they really advertised.
