Fan Bingbing to Receive Malaysian Datukship for Boosting Tourism

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing is set to receive a prestigious Datukship in Melaka this Sunday, 24 August, in recognition of her efforts to promote the Malaysian state as a global tourism hotspot. The investiture ceremony coincides with the birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh praised the actress for bringing international attention to the historic city, noting that her involvement has significantly boosted Melaka’s profile among tourists. Fan, 43, was previously appointed Melaka tourism ambassador in May last year, and within three months, her campaigns generated a remarkable 1.2 billion online searches for the state.

The actress is expected to be in Malaysia this weekend not only for the official investiture but also for a launch of her beauty products at Watsons outlets, held at The Exchange TRX. The event highlights her dual role as both a cultural ambassador and a business influencer.

Following in the Footsteps of International Stars

Fan joins other global celebrities who have received similar Malaysian honours, including Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and martial arts legend Jackie Chan. Khan was awarded a Datukship in 2008 after filming two movies in Melaka, which helped promote the state internationally.

Jackie Chan received the Panglima Mahkota Wilayah (PMW) title in 2015 for his contributions to promoting Malaysia, particularly Kuala Lumpur, following the filming of Police Story 3: Super Cop in the capital city. These awards reflect Malaysia’s recognition of foreign celebrities who contribute to tourism and cultural exchange.

The Datukship, or Datuk Kehormat, is an honorary title that carries recognition similar to knighthood in the West. It symbolises appreciation for contributions to society, culture, or tourism, and allows recipients to use the honorific “Datuk” before their names.

Fan’s Impact on Malaysian Tourism

Since being appointed Melaka tourism ambassador, Fan Bingbing has actively participated in promotional campaigns, media events, and public appearances. Her presence has attracted international media attention, boosting both cultural interest and visitor numbers to Melaka.

Officials note that her contributions have not only elevated the state’s profile but also created opportunities for partnerships with private companies, further enhancing economic and tourism benefits. Her recognition is a reflection of Malaysia’s strategy to engage global celebrities in tourism promotion.

Fan’s investiture as a Datuk serves as a high-profile example of how international stars can influence tourism and cultural awareness, reinforcing the value of celebrity endorsements in global marketing campaigns.
