FT EARNS $3.5K IN S’PORE AS INTERIOR DESIGNER, PEOPLE TELLING HIM IT’S A HIGH SALARY

Interior Designer in SG, how much do you earn?

Advertisements

Hi everyone,

I’m an interior designer with 2 years of experience working in Singapore. I’m a foreigner under an Employment Pass and hold a diploma from a local college.

As I’m starting to look for new job opportunities, I’m curious about how much I can expect to earn with my background and experience.

Currently, my salary is SGD 3500 and some people have told me that it’s quite high, but I’m not entirely sure. I would appreciate any insights or advice from fellow interior designers or anyone with knowledge of the industry.

If you have a similar background to mine or know someone who does, I would love to hear about your experiences with salaries in Singapore.

What should I be looking for when negotiating a new job offer? Are there any red flags to watch out for?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. I look forward to hearing from you!

  1. If salary is what you’re looking at; Try design and build or contracting firms. They earn a hell lot. They treat projects like being in sales, they work fast, churn designs out fast too (although, the design is questionable and it can be a case of stamp and chop, that’s why it’s quick business. No offence to any out there)
  2. I’ve been in the interior design industry for 7 years (small ‘reputable’ firm of just 3 people), I have friends working in design and build and contracting firms and to hear how much they earn (commission based) is crazy at times. IMO, the first firm you join is crucial. It can make or break you because it’ll affect how you look at this industry. I hope you’re able to find one that will help you grow as a designer and also as a person. Good luck!
  3. ID and architect I guess is like artist.. their work are their credential.. showing your qualification will only get you a job, but it’s your work, and your standing in the industry that can bring you bigger paycheck. Hence, in big firm you’ll need to have some luck and lot’s of patience, while in smaller firm, you can decide how you want to prosper and move forward.
