Grab Driver Told By People To Upskill For Better Career Choices Or Advancement, But does it really helps?

Seriously guys, I need to get this off my chest. I’ve been driving Grab full-time for the last four years, and if I have to hear one more tech bro from MBFC or financial advisor passenger tell me to “upskill,” I am going to slam my brakes on the MCE.

Let’s be brutally honest here. Every time a passenger starts talking about their wealth management strategies, real estate investment portfolio, or how I should pivot into software engineering and artificial intelligence, they make it sound like taking a three-day SkillsFuture course is going to magically turn me into a tech CEO.

Bro, I drive 12 hours a day just to cover car rental, petrol, and basic living expenses. You think I have the mental bandwidth to go back home at 11 PM and study cloud computing architecture, B2B SaaS digital marketing, or enterprise resource planning? They always throw around these high-paying buzzwords from their air-conditioned offices like data analytics, machine learning, and quantitative finance. “Oh uncle, you should learn coding, tech is the future! You can do freelance web development, search engine optimization, or become a digital transformation consultant.”

Wake up your idea leh. Even the local university grads with actual degrees in computer science and cybersecurity are struggling to find entry-level jobs in this current 2026 market. You think HR is going to look at my resume—four years of Grab, three years of retail—and hire me as their next financial planning analyst or project management professional just because I clicked through a Coursera video on blockchain technology?

The reality of career advancement in Singapore is that paper qualifications from random bootcamps don’t bypass the massive wall of corporate gatekeeping. Upskilling is a luxury for those who already have a stable income, comprehensive health insurance, and the time to build a personal finance safety net. When you are living hand to mouth, relying on daily cash outs just to pay for your HDB housing loan and your kid’s expenses, trying to transition into enterprise software sales or digital wealth accumulation is an absolute pipe dream.

Half the time, the people giving me this “advice” are just trying to sell me whole life insurance, push a mortgage refinancing package, or get me to sign up for some sketchy forex trading and cryptocurrency exchange masterclass. “Bro, you want to achieve financial independence? Just take up some business loans and attend my seminar on high-yield dividend investing!” Please lah, I just want to clear my daily incentive targets, not fund your passive income.

I’m not saying learning new things is bad. But stop selling this toxic positivity that any gig worker can just “upskill” their way into a 10k/month investment banking or cloud infrastructure role. The gig economy is a trap, yes, but telling us to just learn financial risk management shows exactly how out of touch some of these CBD folks really are.

End of rant. If you are taking a Grab today, just say thank you and alight. Keep your business administration and credit card rewards advice to yourself.
