Gunman Opens Fire at Bangkok’s Or Tor Kor Market, Kills 5 Before Taking Own Life

BANGKOK – A shooting tragedy unfolded in the heart of Bangkok’s Bang Sue district on 28 July, when a 61-year-old Thai man opened fire at the bustling Or Tor Kor Market, leaving five people dead before turning the gun on himself. Police confirmed that the shooter died by suicide shortly after the attack.

Initial reports by local and international media indicate that at least six individuals lost their lives in the incident. Among the deceased are four security guards, according to AFP, although conflicting numbers have been reported as investigations are still ongoing. The identity of the shooter has not been disclosed at the time of writing.

“This is a mass shooting incident. We are currently working to determine the motive,” said Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief of Bang Sue district, who briefed AFP. Authorities have not ruled out links between the attacker and the recent violent border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, which have claimed dozens of lives over the past week.

Bangkok Market Turns into Scene of Horror

The shooting took place at Or Tor Kor Market, a well-known location among both locals and tourists for its premium produce and street food offerings. Situated near the popular Chatuchak weekend market, the area typically sees high foot traffic, raising alarm over the ease with which the gunman carried out the attack.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as shoppers and vendors scrambled for cover when gunshots rang out. Emergency services arrived swiftly, but by then, five victims had already been fatally wounded, and the shooter was confirmed dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The attack has shaken the Thai capital, sparking fresh concerns over public safety in densely populated commercial areas. Authorities have increased security in the vicinity and are reviewing surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts to piece together the sequence of events.

Possible Political or Border Conflict Links Under Review

Although the motive has yet to be officially established, investigators are exploring whether the gunman acted alone due to personal grievances or if his actions were influenced by broader political or geopolitical tensions. The incident comes at a sensitive time for Thailand, which recently agreed to a ceasefire with Cambodia after five days of deadly border conflict.

The suggestion that the shooting may have links to this broader unrest has not been confirmed, but the timing has prompted speculation. Analysts note that nationalist sentiments have surged on both sides of the Thai-Cambodian border, and concerns have been raised about the potential for internal destabilisation.

Police have urged the public not to speculate while investigations continue. Mental health, political motives, and personal vendettas are all being explored as possible contributing factors.

As Thailand mourns the victims of this horrific act, questions are also mounting over how a civilian could access a firearm and execute a mass shooting in such a high-traffic public space. The incident is expected to reignite debates about gun control laws and security in public venues.

Authorities have promised a full and transparent investigation into the tragedy. Further updates are expected in the coming days as more details emerge.
